Dr. Roy Brown Young
August 14, 1946 ~ January 29, 2021 (age 74)
Dr. Roy Brown Young, 74, of Hillsboro went to be with our Lord and Savior on January 29, 2021, at Hill Regional Hospital.
Dr. Young was born on August 14, 1946, to Roy Leonard Young and Vesta Faye Brown Young in Fort Worth, Texas. As a child, Dr. Young moved to a ranch in Annetta, TX with his family where he developed a love for ranching. He and his family later moved to the Young family farm in Mertens, TX during his high school years. He continued to foster his love of agriculture and animals. He developed a strong work ethic while working on the farm, at a local gas station, and attending school. He also shared his love with his father of working on cars and machinery with his father. He graduated from Frost High School in 1964. He attended Navarro Community College and was accepted into Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine where he earned dual credit for his undergraduate and Doctoral degrees. He was initiated into the Phi Theta Kappa Fraternity in March, 1965. He also became a member of Phi Kappa Phi in 1968. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1968 and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1969 from Texas A&M. He moved to Hillsboro, TX and began practicing veterinary medicine in association with TB Bond Pharmacy. Clients called TB Bond Drug Store to request a home or farm veterinary visit. Dr. Young taught science classes at Navarro Community College and Hill College while opening his own practice, Young’s Animal Hospital in 1969. Dr. Young practiced veterinary medicine for 52 years at Young Animal Hospital.
Dr. Young believed in contributing to the growth and prosperity of his community.
He served on the Hillsboro Independent School Board for 12 years beginning in 1984. Dr. Young promoted the advancement of the district by gaining funding to build an elementary school and make improvements to school buildings within the district. He served as president of the school board when the district successfully pursued restitution from a contractor for faulty construction of a school which was tried by the and pursued to the Texas Supreme Court. He was also the representative of the school board when they successfully defended the school district in a lawsuit filed in the Federal District Court which was appealed to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans. Dr. Young received the Community Builder Award by the Masonic Grand Lodge of Texas in 2001. Young’s Animal was recognized by the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce as business of the year in 2016. He was a strong supporter of the Hill County Fair, FFA, and 4H organizations. He hosted class field trips and agricultural students at his office to teach them more about agriculture and the practice of veterinary medicine.
Dr. Young was a lifelong learner. He enjoyed studying and teaching others his entire life. No one benefited more from his knowledge than his children and grandchildren. He loved teaching them about all aspects of life and the lessons he had learned. His greatest aspiration was to ensure his children and grandchildren were well educated, responsible, and productive members of society.
Dr. Young was preceded in death by his father, Roy Leonard Young, and his mother, Vesta Faye Brown Young.
Survivors include his loving spouse Shelly Kettler; his daughters, Hayley Tidwell and husband David of Burleson, Dr. Suzanne Jenkins of Hillsboro; sons Roy Marcus Young and wife Sarah of Abbott, Lance Kettler and wife Brandee of Hillsboro, TX; and 12 grandchildren; Roy Brown Young II of Scottsdale, AZ; Jacob Pavelka of Abbott, TX; Grace Young, Jared Pavelka and Julia Pavelka of Abbott, TX; Cooper Tidwell and Bryant Tidwell of Burleson, TX; Joey Pavelka of Abbott, TX; Elizabeth Jenkins and Nathaniel Jenkins of Hillsboro, TX; Lakyn Kettler and Landyn Kettler of Hillsboro, TX. He is also survived by his sister Lucy Hobby of Alvord, TX.
