Joseph A. Van De Walle, Jr.
October 11, 1942 - February 11, 2021
Joseph A. Van De Walle, Jr. born in San Antonio, the oldest son of Joseph A. and Mary Lorraine Marnock Van De Walle was raised on the family farm founded by his grandparents, Octave and Leonie Van De Walle of the Belgian farming community. He was the first grandchild of Alfred and Mary Woller Marnock decedents of early Texas settlers Dr. George Frederick Marnock and Dr. Gabriel Marnock.
He attended St. Martin's Hall, and graduated from Central Catholic High School where he was recognized as an outstanding football player receiving an award as All State Defensive player and the Joske's of Texas 1959 trophy for Most Valuable Player. He overcame a debilitating injury to attend St. Mary's University then enrolled at Texas A&M University, College Station, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree.
He returned to the family farm to join his uncles and father in the produce business at Van De Walle and Sons. Joe participated in an agriculture tour to Europe where he was able to visit the Belgian family relatives in Loekern, near Ghent. Returning to San Antonio he negotiated sales of Texas vegetables to Europe, cementing relationships from his earlier trip.
He was active with the Bexar County Truck Farmers Association, South Texas Vegetable Day, and the Bexar County Farm Bureau, being elected President for two terms. He served as a Director on the City of San Antonio Market Square Advisory Board. He was elected to the Board of the Texas Citrus and Vegetable Association, and served as Secretary to the association. As a Director and officer of Van De Walle Farms he pushed for transforming the family operations to a business corporation and processing the vegetable products to a prepared sauce as Van De Walle Farms Picante. Joe was the founding Chairman of the Texas Pepper Association.
In 1982, he was elected the Bexar Republican nominee for County Commissioner, Precinct 2. He continued his lifelong interest in government, hunting, football and investments. He is a 50 year member of the Alhambra de Bejar having served as an officer.
Joe is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carol, his brother Michael '69 (Cyndy), his brother in law, Stephen Haecker '81 (Antonette), and sister in law Robin Green (Doug) and his nieces and nephews including Jeffrey '09 and Krystyn '10, and many extended Van De Walle and Marnock cousins. He is predeceased by his parents, his brother Charles Kenneth and sister, Cynthia Diane.
