Dr. Glenn E. "Gus" Baker, 87, of College Station, Texas, passed away comfortably and peacefully in his home on Saturday, January 16, 2021.
Gus was born in Goose Creek, Texas to Robert E. Baker and Jessie K. Groesbeeck Baker. His family followed his father's work to Monahans and later Midland, TX. He graduated from Midland High School in 1951, where he was a member of the National Honor Society
and a football letterman. Gus graduated from Texas A&M in 1956 as a distinguished student and a letterman in fencing. Following a tour with the U.S. Army in Korea, he returned to teach industrial arts in Midland and in the Fort Worth Public Schools. Gus earned
both Masters and Doctoral degrees in Industrial Education at Texas A&M in 1961 and 1966, respectively, with post graduate studies at Colorado State University and the University of Maryland.
Dr. Baker's collegiate teaching career began at Wayne State College of Nebraska in 1966, where he met and married Judy K. Hunzeker, the love of his life, in 1967. He later taught at the University of Missouri – Columbia and North Carolina State University before
returning to Texas A&M in 1977 to join the faculty in Industrial Education. Dr. Baker was committed to developing young adults, serving as an academic advisor to both the Athletics Department and the Corps of Cadets and as a mentor to numerous graduate students.
Active in his profession with memberships in several professional organizations, he served as national president of the research association for his field and received numerous research grants. Dr. Baker authored or coauthored more than 130 publications, including
17 books; and he received more than 30 awards from university, state, and national associations. He served as a visiting professor at Memorial University in Newfoundland, Canada in 1982 and 1983. Dr. Baker retired in 1997 as Professor Emeritus of Educational
Human Resource Development.
Dr. Baker shared his belief in public service and love of the outdoors and Texas A&M with his family and through his community activities. He was an active member of the Lions Clubs International and Boy Scouts of America, the latter in which he served as Scoutmaster
and on the Arrowmoon District Committee. An avid genealogist, Dr. Baker also belonged to the Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of the Republic of Texas, Magna Charta Barons, and Americans of Royal Descent. He was a loyal Aggie and belonged to the Texas
A&M Lettermen's Association, Association of Former Students, Corps of Cadets Association, Brazos Valley A&M Club, and 12th Man Foundation.
Gus Baker is survived by his wife of 53 years, Judy; son, John Baker, and his wife, Rachel, and their sons, Colin and Logan, of San Antonio, TX; and son, Robert Baker, and his wife, Wendy, and son, Wylder, of Nacogdoches, TX. A private service for the family
will be held at the Aggie Field of Honor in College Station on January 24, 2021.
