Dr. William Edward Richards
1963 - 2021
William Edward Richards, born May 24, 1963 in Pasadena, Texas to William and Gladys Richards, passed away suddenly on February 6, 2021.
Dr. Richards was a scholar who started his schooling at his beloved Texas A&M University, receiving a B.S. Degree in Psychology. He received his Doctorate of Medicine degree from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine. He then completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple, Texas, and his fellowship training in Gynecologic Oncology at The University of Kentucky. While simultaneously caring for patients, he excelled further and earned his MBA at The University of Michigan Stephen M. Ross School of Business, and he was recently named Medical Director of The Lewis Cancer and Research Pavilion and Endowed Chair of Robotic Surgery at St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital in Savannah, Georgia. Dr. Richards was a leading expert in the robotic surgery field, who other physicians trusted to care for their most vulnerable patients and complex cases. His humbled and team-oriented approach will be deeply missed by his many professional colleagues, as will his unique style of singing while operating and wearing cowboy boots with his scrubs. Dr. Richards made his patients and their families feel comforted and safe during the darkest moments of their lives, and they will forever remember him for his strength, compassion, wit, and the second chance at life that he provided to them and their loved ones.
Dr. Richards is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Susan C. Richards. They raised three beautiful daughters who chose three wonderful men to share their lives with: Sarah Ann Richards and her husband Alex Smith; Emily Nicole Richards and her husband Kyle McMeekin; and Madeline Denise Richards and her husband-to-be Kyle Jackson. In addition, he is survived by his mother, Gladys Richards of Pasadena, Texas, by his four grandchildren, Elizabeth (Ellie), Brady, Blaire and William (Liam), and by the thousands of lives that he forever touched.
Known to his friends and family as “Eddie,” or more recently to his grandchildren as “Doc,” he will be remembered for his compassion and dedication to his family, friends, patients, and faith. He was an avid music lover with a beautiful singing voice, loved sports of all kinds, and knew more than most about good whiskey. In Savannah, he could always be found on his boat sailing the Intercoastal Waterway or walking his three beloved granddogs through the neighborhood. Above all, nothing mattered more to him than his family, and he often reminded them that no matter how dark times may seem, the best is always yet to come.
A Memorial Mass will be scheduled at a later date.
