AUGUST 28, 1951 – FEBRUARY 2, 2021
Gregory “Greg” Bartholomew Thomas Aquinas Contreras, 69, peacefully passed away on February 2, 2021. His larger-than-life personality will leave an irreplaceable void in the family he cherished and loved.
Greg was born August 28, 1951 to Ciprian and Beatrice Contreras in Houston, Texas. He was the third of seven children, with three brothers and three sisters. He would, with great conviction, tell you that he was his parents’ favorite child. He loved making people laugh and was an equal opportunity tormenter. He perfected only one piano song, “More”, which his siblings listened to him play over and over. When he was done playing he would ask, “Want to hear “More”?”
Greg graduated from his beloved alma mater, St. Thomas High School, in 1969. He was a star athlete and member of the football and track teams. To this day, people refer to him as #85. He remained in close touch with his Eagles band of brothers up until his death.
Greg married Brenda Hernandez on August 2, 1969. They raised three daughters: Claudine, Christine, and Charis. Brenda and their daughters were the loves of his life. His legacy of fierce independence and exuberant laughter lives on in each of them.
Greg attended Texas A&M University (Whoop!) and graduated in 1976 with an Accounting degree. Like his parents, who instilled the importance of education in all their children, Greg preached that message to his daughters and grandchildren, as well as his nieces and nephews. The path to education did not matter. For Greg, it was all about finishing what you started.
Over the years, Greg worked many jobs including stints at Lester O. Weison, CPA, Finger Furniture, and Retail Concepts. For the last many years, he poured his heart and soul into Ledwell Construction Company, the construction company he owned. The fruits of his labor are grounded in the Crockett country home he and Brenda shared with family. The five-acre spread was his favorite retreat from the long hours and many miles logged on his work trips.
Greg’s role as Daddy was equaled in his role as Pappy to his seven grandsons. He let them tag along with him whenever he could and loved being in their presence. Despite his gruff demeanor, the youngest family members were drawn to Greg and he delighted in teasing them. The more he teased them, the more they loved him. Greg will be most remembered for his limitless generosity and his keen sense of humor.
Greg’s foundation in faith began at St. Augustine Catholic School and continued at his beloved St. Thomas High School. Through all his antics, of which his family and friends knew there were many, he remained a man of steadfast faith in God. The love of God imparted to him by his parents, was a value he and Brenda diligently and obediently passed on to their daughters and continues as a living legacy in his grandsons. Without doubt, his faith allowed him to experience the comfort and perfect love of those waiting to guide him home in his final days.
Greg’s father, mother, and brother, Fred, precede him in death. Greg leaves behind his wife of 51 years, Brenda; daughter, Claudine (Deana) Skucius and husband, Chris; daughter, Christine (Krissy) Wallace and husband, Damon; daughter, Charis Saldivar and husband, Jesse; grandsons Braden Wallace, Gregory Contreras, Blazek Skucius, Liam Wallace, Ashton Saldivar, Mathieu Saldivar, and Morgan Saldivar; brother and sister-in-law, Ciprian and Pam Contreras; sister, Bernadette Contreras; sister and brother-in-law, Mariette and Jim Williams; sister and brother-in-law, Angelica and Mike Sutton; brother and sister-in-law, Norbert and Caroline Contreras; and many nieces and nephews, cousins and lifelong friends.
