Daniel S. Peña,
1923-2020

Daniel Steve Peña passed away on November 24, 2020 at the age of 97. He was born on June 30, 1923 in Laredo, Texas and attended high school there where he lettered in football, basketball, and track. He attended Texas A&M University and graduated in 1945 with a degree in civil engineering.

In 1943, he was inducted into the Armed Forces and during his time in the army, he spent 17 months in the European Theater in Company C, an engineering combat battalion. He received the American Theater Campaign Ribbon and two Bronze Stars while in the army. He was Honorably Discharged from the Armed Forces in March, 1946. In 1949, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Ready Reserve until his discharge in 1953.

His first job after graduating college was in Clifton, Texas designing dams for the Corps of Engineers. From there, he worked for a private engineering firm in Maracaibo, Venezuela before coming back to the United States. He worked as the Assistant City Engineer for San Antonio, Texas from the early 1970’s until he retired in 1989. Following his retirement from the city, he continued to work part time for K.M. Ng and Associates Engineering until his late eighties.

Daniel was a founding member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in San Antonio in 1958 where he worshipped for the next 62 years until his death.

He is preceded in death by his wife Margaret to whom he was married for 68 years. He is survived by his three children, Daniel Jr; Carlos; and Laura; and had 6 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Daniel was a sincere and humble man greatly admired and respected by his family and friends and he will be missed. He was laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery on December 9, 2020 in San Antonio, Texas.
