Richard Leavitt '54 January 27, 2021 5:29 PM updated: January 27, 2021 5:42 PM

Richard Harrison Leavitt, Sr.
April 4, 1933 – January 22, 2021

Richard “Dick” Harrison Leavitt of Providence Village, Texas was born on April 4, 1933 in St. Louis, Missouri to Maurice Nash Leavitt and Anne Elizabeth Wood Leavitt. He died January 22, 2021 in Allen, Texas. Dick was the middle brother, between David Nash Leavitt and John Trowbridge Leavitt.

Dick was raised in San Antonio and graduated from Texas A&M in 1954. He married Lelia Mae Chase and became an Army pilot stationed at Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico. Dick flew L-19 and L-20 planes, and occasionally H-23 helicopters, over the White Sands Missile Range. Their two children, Richard and Katharine, were both born on base at Holloman. The family moved to Irving, Texas.

Dick and Le divorced and he married Jane McInnis Lange. She brought her two daughters, Ann and Sharon, into their new marriage. Dick was an electrical engineer with Square D, Dallas Power & Light, and Trinity Electric. He and Bob Stevenson founded Leavitt Electric Company in 1973 where he remained until his retirement.

Dick became an avid snow skier, a talented sailboat captain, and a commodore for the Dallas Corinthian Yacht Club on Lake Dallas. He also enjoyed building and flying radio controlled airplanes. He and friend Butch Mallam built a large plane with 4 engines and a wing span over 8 feet wide. He taught his son Rick to fly at a young age and they shared that hobby for many years.

Dick Leavitt was looked upon as the go-to-guy; someone with an engineering mind that could always tell you which way the motor should be turning, or how to build something bigger, better, and stronger. You could turn to him with any question, knowing he probably had the answer. He will be missed very much!

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, and Jane, his wife of 46 years. He is survived by five children: Richard H. Leavitt, Jr., Katharine A. Leavitt-Fowler, G. Reid Lange, Jr., Ann M. Lange, Sharon E. Warren, eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11:00 am Friday, February 5, 2021 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 2255 N Bonnie Brae St, Denton, Texas with Fr. Tim Thompson officiating.
