Felix Johnathan Burton Jr.
September 30, 1940 ~ January 21, 2021 (age 80)
Felix Johnathan Burton, Jr. was received into Heaven by the Lord Jesus Christ on January 21, 2021, passing from health complications while battling cancer. Through it all, he demonstrated his usual patient and uncomplaining spirit.
John was born on September 30, 1940 in San Antonio, TX. to Billie Lee Friday Burton and Felix Johnathan Burton, Sr. He graduated from Henderson High School, Henderson, TX in 1958, where he served as President of the Senior Class and was chosen Captain of both the football and baseball teams. John was a 1962 graduate of Texas A&M University with a BBA in Accounting. While at A&M, he played football for 1 year and baseball for 4 years. He was elected Captain of the baseball team in 1962. John was also honored to serve as Vice President of the “T” Association in 1961 & 1962 and referred to himself as a “big” Aggie who dearly loved his alma mater. He was also a lifelong member of the 12th Man Foundation. John continued to further his education at the University of Texas Law School, receiving a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1965 and holding memberships in the Texas Bar Association & the CPA Society.
John had a multi-faceted and successful career in the banking and manufacturing industries, while starting an accounting firm early in his career. He was a “business man” through and through, enjoying his work and relationships built throughout his long career.
John loved and cherished his family and married Carole Tice Burton in 1980 and they enjoyed 40 years of learning new things together. They learned to snow ski together in their early 40’s so they could ski with their children. They bought a farm in Burton and learned to take care of cattle and the land where he loved sunsets and riding his tractor. They loved having a country place to gather the family for years of memories. John semi-retired from his Houston company, Champion Hi-Tech, in 2011, to enjoy his home on acreage in Chappell Hill.
He cherished his time attending Aggie football games with his children and grandchildren, watching grandchildren in their sporting events, plays, and receiving honors. John was a member of Second Baptist Church in Houston where he served as Deacon. Upon moving to Chappell Hill, he joined Brenham First Baptist Church. In his latter years, he focused on eternal things and reading his Bible every day for many years. He loved listening to the choir of First Baptist Church in Dallas before retiring each night. He grew in his faith and love for his Savior & Lord - leaving this earth as a man “blessed of the Lord”.
He is survived by his wife, Carole; children, Beth Medlin; Jeana VanDyke & husband Jody; step-children: Ragan Shawell & Leslie Shawell Niermeyer. Grandchildren: Price Burton Medlin,
Johnathan Rowe Medlin; Bailey VanDyke; Nate VanDyke & wife Bailey Cheyenne; step-grandchildren, Rylee Steele Shawell, Caden Everett Shawell and Kirby Carole Niermeyer.
He is preceded in death by his parents Felix and Billie Burton, and grandson, Grey Medlin.
Pallbearers that are honored, include: Price Medlin, Rowe Medlin, Nate VanDyke, Jody VanDyke, Caden Shawell and Ragan Shawell.
We want to recognize the care John received in the Methodist Hospital ICU and the Kindred Critical Care Medical Center ICU. With special thanks and love to the doctors and nurses who tirelessly gave their time and care— always cheerful and compassionate in difficult health emergencies.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, January 27, 2021 at First Baptist Church, 304 N Market St, Brenham, TX 77833. Burial will follow immediately at Prairie Lea Cemetery, 1004 Prairie Lea St, Brenham, TX 77833.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 West Main Street, Brenham, TX 77833.
