C. H. Maguire, Jr., a bank executive for 34 years, a church and civic leader, died Sunday, January 17, 2021, at the age of 98. .

Graveside Services with Military Honors will be at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, January 20, 2021, at Ramsey Cemetery, 3 miles southwest of Stephenville on State Highway 8 (Lingleville Hwy) with Brother Werth Mayes officiating under the direction of Lacy Funeral Home.

Mickey was born in Galveston, Texas, to Charlie and Bertha (Ormes) Maguire on February 26, 1922. He graduated from Ball High School in Galveston participating in the ROTC program. He and five of his classmates came to John Tarleton Agricultural College in 1939, which then had a mandatory participating ROTC program. He finished his ROTC training at Texas A & M College, majoring in Economics with a minor in Accounting. He received his 2nd Lt.’s commission in the Infantry from Officer’s Candidates School in Fort Benning, GA.

On September 13, 1943, he married Stella Pearl Nix in Corvallis, Oregon, who preceded him in death January 15, 1994, after a marriage partnership of over fifty years.

In July 1944 he joined the 2nd Infantry division as a combat platoon leader, seeing action in the Northern France, Battle of the Bulge, and Rhineland campaigns. He was wounded in street fighting in Brest, France for which he received the Purple Heart. Other service awards were: Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Bronze Star, American Campaign Medal, European Medal with three bronze battle stars, and the World War II Victory Medal. He was discharged in June of 1946 and stayed in the Active Army Reserve until 1957, having obtained the rank of Captain.

Maguire’s first job was a bookkeeper at the Farmers First National Bank, followed by a five-year stint as City Secretary, Tax Collector and Assessor and Water Department Manager for the City of Stephenville. This was followed by two years as Stephenville Hospital and Clinic Administrator. In 1952, Maguire went into the Stephenville State Bank as Cashier and CEO. He retired in 1986 after serving the last two years as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors. In addition to being a director at Stephenville Bank & Trust, he served as a Director in the Comanche National Bank, Mills County State Bank of Goldthwaite, West Texas Chamber of Commerce, Texas A & M Former Students Association, and the Kidney Foundation.

Maguire served as President of the Stephenville Lions Club (where he was a member since 1947), also president of Stephenville Chamber of Commerce, Stephenville Industrial Foundation, the Texas Club, Tarleton Alumni Association, Tarleton Development Foundation, the Terrell Foundation, and the Stephenville Investment Club. He served as Chairman of the Stephenville Recreation Board, Stephenville United Way, City Planning and Zoning Commission, and Erath County Central Appraisal District Board. He was a member of the City Charter and City Zoning Ordinance Writing Commissions, the Texas A & M Target 2000 Commission, and a member of the First Baptist Church since 1947. Maguire served as Vice Chairman of the Board of the Mills County State Bank, as a Vice President of the Texas A & M Former Students Association, and as American Legion Adjutant for the 17th District, and a paid up life member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the American Legion Post 240 for over 72 years.

In 1979, he received from Tarleton State University their Distinguished Alumni Award. In 1984, he gave the commencement address at Tarleton and received the first Presidential Award of Merit to be given. It reads: “In appreciation for meritorious service to Tarleton State University for more than three decades”.

In the First Baptist Church, Maguire was elected a deacon in 1955, Chairman of the Deacon Body in 1957, chairman of both the fund raising committee and the plans and specifications committee for the sanctuary built in 1977. He served on the church’s finance committee for three, three-year terms and as the committee’s chairman twice. He served on the remodeling committee for the old sanctuary in 1963. He taught Sunday school classes for 14 to 16-year-old boys, and lastly taught a class of 53 to 70-year-old men. He also served several years as superintendent in the young adult department and later in the college department.

His family and friends dearly loved Mickey and he loved them, and he was known to brag enthusiastically on his family. He loved his Savior and practiced his faith. Mickey was a patriot and loved his Country. His other passion was education, and he was instrumental in advising several family members and friends to attend Texas A & M University and Tarleton State University. He loved a party and loved to wear crazy socks to see reactions from others. He had a zest for life and cheered up others with his wonderful sense of humor.

Mickey was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his sister, Ruth Schultz. He is survived by his son, Charles Maguire and wife, Brenda, of Lewisville, his daughter, Nancy Evatt and husband, Howard, of Stephenville, his grandsons, Mick Maguire and wife, Robin, of Lewisville, Jay Maguire and wife, Stephanie, of California, Andy Maguire and fiancé, Sigrid Jensen, of California, Chris Evatt and wife, Jackie, of San Angelo, and granddaughter, Jessica Evatt Waters and husband, Michael, of Tennessee, great-grandchildren, Micah, Ella, Olivia, Evelyn, Swift and June Maguire, Carter and Cadence Evatt, and Bankston and Webster Waters, and several nieces and nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorials be made to Tarleton State University Foundation Endowed Scholarship Fund in the name of Mickey and Stella Maguire at the address TSU Foundation Box T-0950, Stephenville, TX 76402.
