James Robert "Jim Bob" Spencer Jr
1944 - 2020
James Robert Spencer Jr, Jim Bob, died on December 3 at his home in San Marcos, Texas. He was 76 years old. Born May 23, 1944, he was the eldest son of three children born to James Robert (Bob) Spencer, longtime manager of the Clovis Chamber of Commerce and of whom Bob Spencer Park is named, and Helen Day Spencer, housewife and lifelong resident of Clovis.
Jim Bob was loved by his large family and is survived by his wife, Lisa Merrill Spencer; brother, Philip Day Spencer and his wife, Carroll Cavanagh Spencer; and sister, Lisa Carol Spencer. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife of 31 years, Karen Laughlin Spencer. He will be missed by nieces, Patricia Spencer, Suzanne Spencer Audette, Jennifer Spielvogel Kahler, Kathryn Spielvogel, and Elizabeth Russler Walters; nephews, Eric Spielvogel, Christian Spielvogel, Spencer Hammond, and Alex Russler. He had many adoring cousins, in-laws, and friends all over the nation.
After graduating from Clovis High School in 1962, he attended Texas A&M University where he was a proud member of the Corps of Cadets. He graduated in 1968 with a bachelor of science in civil engineering. Jim Bob spent two years in Germany as an officer serving in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers during the Vietnam Era. After completing his service, he began his very successful 38-year career in Washington D.C. initially with Bernard Johnson, Inc. and ultimately as the Northeast Region Vice President of Volkert Inc., an international engineering firm.
He obtained his MFA in ceramics from George Washington University and was an accomplished ceramicist creating large sculptures with intricate textures and colorations. As an adjunct instructor at GWU from 1994 - 2001, Jim Bob taught ceramic decoration, advanced decoration, glaze formulation and calculation. Throughout the years, he was featured in many exhibits including The Dimock Gallery, Washington D.C. and later at Texas State University at the Joann Cole Mitte Building.
After retiring in 2007, he and his wife, Lisa, moved to San Marcos, Texas. There they became involved with the city, community, and Texas State University, where Jim Bob was appointed to sit on the advisory committee of the international school of business. He and his wife were also patrons of the art and music departments where they were principal sponsors, together with Sharon Lockett, creating the Spencer/ Lockett Scholarship Fund to assist aspiring music students with tuition.
Jim Bob's many friends and family will long remember his kind hearted disposition, humor, and ability to tell a story that made everyone laugh. His kindness, integrity, and gracious spirit will be missed.
A memorial fund has been created and the family is requesting, in lieu of flowers, donations be given to the Texas Aggie Corps of Cadets Association, Attn: Honor/Memorial Gifts, 1134 Finfeather Road, Bryan, TX 77803-3823.
