Robert Douglas McGar
October 5th, 1931

Robert Douglas McGar was born on October 5th, 1931 to Robert W. McGar and Ion Mercedes Amburn. He grew up in Texas City and attended Texas City High School where he met his future wife, Beverly Jane Cockrell. After graduation in 1950, he enrolled in the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M College. The following year, on September 4th, 1951, Bob and Jane were married and resided the next three years at College Station, Texas. After graduation, he was commissioned into the U.S Army where he rose to the rank of LtCol serving tours in Germany, Korea, and Vietnam. After retiring in 1975, he moved his family to the Wimberley area where he was a teacher at Hays Consolidated. He and Jane were some of the original hirees of WISD where he taught economics, history, and government. He is fondly remembered by many of his students. After retiring he and Jane traveled the World for many years with their life-long friends, Joan and Lou Konze.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Jane, their son, R. Shaun McGar, and grandson, Austin McGar. He is survived by his sister Lila Soderberg and her family; his eldest son, Michael McGar and his two sons, Casey and Ian; his son, Kevin McGar, wife, Nohemi and their two sons, Kory and Custer; and his daughter, Kimberley McGar Stephens and her husband, Ret. Colonel, B.J Stephens, and their two daughters, Kendall and Alexandra. During his time in Wimberley, he served as the VFW Post Commander, and in his later years, it became his family tradition to directly donate money to needy families in his Christmas-cash-giveaway at the Crisis Bread Basket.
