Clifford Barney Hunter

Clifford Barney Hunter was received into the loving arms of our Lord at the age of 99 on December 16, 2020 in Bryan, Texas. In his lifetime, Clifford was a farmer, military transport pilot, pharmacist, and Lay Eucharistic Minister. He was active until his death and spent time with family, friends, and parishioners. Clifford was a role model and guiding influence in the lives of all who knew him and his legacy will carry on for decades after his passing.

Clifford was born on a farm in Spur, Texas on November 13, 1921. He graduated from high school in Spur and then moved to College Station to attend Texas A&M University where he earned a degree in agricultural finance. He was a member of the infamous Corp of Cadet Class of 1943, who were graduated one semester early in an accelerated program so that they could be inducted as officers during WWII. Infamous because sadly many of Clifford’s classmates and friends did not return home with him.

After the war, Clifford married his beloved Alice Sue Roman in Lubbock in 1948 and began their family, raising two daughters. He attended UT Austin to obtain a second BS degree, this time majoring in pharmacy. Clifford owned Roman Pharmacy and Roman Prescription Shop in Bryan, TX with his wife Alice Sue from the 1950’s thru the 1980’s. Clifford and Alice Sue were lifelong parishioners at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in downtown Bryan where in his later years he served the church in many capacities.

Clifford was an amiable man, accomplished with an enjoyable sense of humor. He was a friend to all who met him, always kind and compassionate, reserving judgment. Family and friends sought him out for advice and guidance, and he could speak at length on almost any topic. During his lifetime, Clifford was influential in mentoring a niece, nephew, two granddaughters, grand-son-in-law, and a great granddaughter into the honorable pharmacy profession that he proudly served.

Clifford was preceded in death by his parents, William Mason Hunter and Jessie McGinty Hunter, and his wife, Alice Sue who passed in 1998. Living to 99 years old, Clifford outlived his brother and sister, as well as his high school and college classmates.

He is survived by his daughters, Carol Sue (James) Rushing of St. Louis, MO and Evelyn Rae Hunter of Bryan, TX, Granddaughters, Deborah (Thomas) McKean, Janette (Chris) Robison, and Dr. Jennifer E Rushing, of St. Louis, MO, five great grandchildren and a great great grandson who was born shortly before his passing. Clifford also has a large extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins scattered across Texas and the United States that he cared about very much.

Everyone is welcomed to the visitation on Friday, January 8th from 5pm – 7pm at Callaway-Jones Funeral Center at 3001 S. College Avenue. The funeral service will be private at St. Andrews Episcopal Church but will be livestreamed on Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church YouTube site at 10am.

Due to the current health concerns and limited seating, only family and church members will attend the service in person.

A public inurnment will be held at 11:15am at Bryan City Cemetery with no limitation of attendance. In lieu of flowers, a memoriam can be made to Saint Andrews Episcopal Church or the charity of your choice, in remembrance of Clifford’s legacy of serving others in the name of Christ.
