Jim Averett, a 73-year-old Fredericksburg pilot and military veteran was killed last week while practicing formation flying.

James Harvey Averett was born on November 29th, 1946 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Harvey Coleman and Dorothy June Blackwell Averett. He grew up in Dallas, Texas, graduating from Bryan Adams High School in 1964 and Texas A&M class of 1968.

Jim Averett, who flew for the U.S. Air Force, Grand Canyon Airlines, Martin Aviation and then Delta Airlines before retiring to fly Lear jets for RJ Machine and the Martin families, lost his life on Nov. 6 in a midair collision. Jim, “Flagman” was well known throughout the formation community in both the RV and Bonanza circles. His skill, easy-going demeanor and most importantly his smile were always on display.

Jim received the Wright Brothers Masters Pilot Award for 50 years of accident free flying in September of 2018. Jim became a member of the Sports Car Club of America from 1979 as a race car driver. He later served as a steward for club racing and then as a pro steward for numerous series.

He married Madeline, his high school sweetheart, on January 31st, 1969 in Dallas, Texas. They celebrated 51 years of marriage in January 2020.

Jim is survived by his wife Madeline Averett of Fredericksburg, Texas, daughter Amanda Pettey, son-in-law Parrish and granddaughter Lily, of The Woodlands, Texas. Brother, Bernie Averett, sister-in-law Patty; sister Dede Hosek, brother-in-law Herve, nieces Ashley Averett, Claire Hosek, Christine Davis and spouse Ryan, nephews, Eric Hosek and spouse Gabby, Jimmy Averett and spouse Robin and great niece and two great nephews.

A virtual Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
