Arnold H. Maner
September 1932 - May 23, 2020

The founding president of Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury died Saturday at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford.

Dr. Arnold Maner, a U.S. Navy veteran, father and grandfather, was 87 years old.

He had lived with his son Mark for the past few years in Magnolia, Delaware, though was previously a Salisbury resident. The Kansas native attended Faith Community Church in Camden, Delaware.

Maner received a Ph.D. in education at the University of Texas A&M. He would go on to hold positions at universities in Nevada, California, Texas and Iowa before becoming the founding president of Wor-Wic.

In November 1975, the community college's board of trustees appointed Maner to serve as president, according to its website. Continuing education courses were offered that fall, and the college opened its doors to credit program students in the fall of 1976.

He was the founding president until 2000 — starting the “college without walls,” only to have it grow to the current campus.

After almost 20 years of leasing classroom and office space at various locations, Wor-Wic purchased nearly 200 acres of land on the southeast corner of Route 50 and Walston Switch Road in Salisbury.

Maner would see the campus officially opened in the fall of 1994

The community figure was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Maner, according to the family. They were married for 61 years.

Maner is survived by Mark and his wife, Ann, of Magnolia, as well as daughter Kita Stephenson and her husband, Jimmy, of Salisbury. He also has three grandchildren, Kate Stephenson, James Stephenson and Nancy Maner.

A celebration of life has yet to be scheduled, as the family waits for a later date when circumstances permit the gathering.

The family says memorial contributions can be made to the Wor-Wic Foundation, Development Office, foundation@worwic.edu or to Faith Community Church, PO Box 1 Camden, DE 19934.
