June 17, 1935 - September 07, 2020

Lee Tarence Popejoy, Jr., M.D., of Jasper, Texas died at Harbor Hospice in Jasper on September 7, 2020. A gathering of family and friends to celebrate his life will be held at Stringer and Griffin Funeral Home in Jasper on Saturday, September 12, 2020 from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. A private family memorial will follow at a later date. Lee was born on June 17, 1935 in Ada, OK to Lee Tarence Popejoy, Sr. and Vivienne Flowers Popejoy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Edith Griggs Popejoy, and brothers Col. Lou Popejoy, M.D., James Popejoy, and sister Carolyn Nell Popejoy. He was a long time Jasper resident and beloved family physician.

He is survived by his wife, Cheri McMahon Popejoy, his children, Laura Popejoy Golden and husband Andy of Jasper, Caroline Popejoy Hart and husband Alan of Jasper, Lee T. Popejoy, III, of Jasper, Kristi Popejoy Pudwill and husband Joe of Bullard, Augusta Popejoy Andrews and husband Brian of Little Rock, AR, Stirling Popejoy and wife Lana of Louisville, KY, Nicholas Popejoy and wife Carrie of Jasper, and step-children Casey Biscamp Wilson and husband Van of Spring, Jason Dickerson and wife Lora Lee of Georgetown, and Meagan Biscamp and partner Kim Johnson of Austin, his brother John Popejoy of Indianapolis, IN, and former wife Judith Popejoy James of Jasper. He leaves behind 17 grandchildren who loved, adored, respected and honored their Paw Paw.

Dr. Popejoy graduated from C.E. Byrd High School in Shreveport, LA, attended the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, graduated from Centenary College in Shreveport in 1957 and Louisiana State University School of Medicine, New Orleans, LA in 1961. During his medical education he served as research assistant in the Department of Anatomy. Following medical school, he completed a year of internship at William Beaumont Army Hospital in El Paso and was reassigned to Fort Gordon Army Hospital in Augusta, GA where he separated from the Army in 1964 having obtained the rank of Captain. After serving in the Army, he moved to Jasper where he joined the staff at Hardy Hancock Hospital and served as a founding member of Mary E. Dickerson Memorial Hospital with colleague and friend, Dr. Joe Wesley Dickerson. He served as an elder in First Presbyterian Church of Jasper. He was a founding member of the Rayburn Yacht Club. He owned and operated a small business, Mechanized Services of America, providing vending machine service throughout East Texas for over 40 years.

Lee enjoyed sailing, reading and discussing history, collecting art and classic cars, model railroading, traveling by train, and entertaining friends and family at his homes in Jasper, El Paso, Gilchrist, TX and New Orleans, LA. He had a genuine interest in people and loved listening to their stories. He had a keen mind that rarely forgot a detail and loved sharing his wisdom with those who listened. Lee was a loving family man, who was generous with his time and attention. He was compassionate, a man of integrity and honor, a true gentleman, full of strength, determination, and perseverance. He was industrious, hardworking, and rose from humble beginnings. Above all, he took honor and privilege in serving his patients and contributing to the health and welfare of the members of his beloved community. Your kind thoughts and prayers will be a blessing to his beloved family.

Services are under the direction of Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home of Jasper.
