Walter Delano "Houey" Clement
September 11, 1935 - March 31, 2020
Walter Delano “Houey” Clement passed away at his home on March 31, 2020. He was born to the late Walter J. and Ruth Olsen Clement on September 11, 1935 in Dallas, Texas and moved to Texarkana two years later.
He graduated from Texas High School and attended Texas A&M.
Houey’s career began with cattle ranching before he be went to work for Farm Credit Association, retiring as President in 1985. In 1987, he purchased Vanco Systems and grew it into a strong community business.
He was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church in Texarkana where he served as Elder, President of the congregation, and a multitude of volunteer positions.
He was married to the love of his life, Jean Allen Clement, for 63 years. He was humbly proud of his three children, Richard (Elizabeth) from Yantis, Texas, Allen (Darla), and Lisa Crittenden (Robert) from Texarkana. In addition, he relished in his five grandchildren, Lindsey Salters (Chris), Brian Clement, Stephanie Moreland (Owen), Michael Thomas (Brooke), and Nicholas Thomas (Mallory). His biggest thrill, however, came from visiting his eight-great grandchildren, Sarah and Shay Salters, Owen Moreland, and Zachary, Amelia, and Luke Thomas, and Eloise and Ragland Thomas.
He was preceded in death by his parent, brother, Donald Clement from Oklahoma City and his sister, Elizabeth Clement Dale from Alamagordo, New Mexico. Beyond the afore-mentioned immediate family, Houey was survived by a multitude of cousins, nieces and nephews ranging from South Louisiana to Minnesota to California. In addition, he maintained many close friendships in Texarkana and will be greatly missed by all.
Houey was a big man with a big personality and a bigger heart. He not only had strength in character, he was a character. He never met a stranger. Furthermore, He never met a person without telling (or retelling) a joke or story. He loved to cook, especially for crowds. He was famous for his beans and smoked barbecue. His hobbies included gardening, fishing, golfing weekly with his buddies, and woodworking. He delighted in giving away his treasures of wood creations, his homegrown cracked pecans, his turnip greens, or anything he had on hand.
Houey was a passionate supporter of Opportunities, Inc., and Watersprings Ranch, both located in Texarkana; In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory.
Due to the current health situation, services will be limited to a small private family gathering. For those who cannot attend, services will be broadcast live at 10am Friday, April 3, 2020 at https://www.facebook.com/texarkanafuneralhome/.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
