Stephen Ellis Taylor
November 14, 1952 - September 16, 2020

On Wednesday September 16th, 2020, Stephen Ellis Taylor, loving husband, father of two, passed away at the age of 67 after a brief battle with cancer. Steve was born on Nov. 14, 1952 in Austin, Texas to Ellis and Katharine (Allen) Taylor. A sixth generation Texan and the oldest of two, Steve was raised by a warm-hearted family who made their home in Plainview, Texas.

He graduated from the Texas A & M University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management in 1975 where he played for the fighin’ Texas aggie football team, was a member of the Corps of Cadets where he was the first C/O of athletic company E-1, served as a Ross Volunteer and was head yell leader his senior year.

On April 17th, 1976, Steve married his sweetheart Lurene Harkness and they waltzed into a life together to the tune of “Silver Wings”. They made their home in Dallas where they raised two children, Ellis, and Jennifer. A devoted father who taught his kids how to hunt, play guitar and could always be found in the stands of their various athletic endeavors.

After graduation he served 9 years in the USAFR. He spent 17 years with Merrill Lynch before starting his own company and later went to work for Newtek as a Vice President. Steve had a passion for history, hunting, fishing, cooking shows, bluegrass, and the word of God. He was known for his humor, storytelling, and encyclopedic knowledge of planes. He will be missed at his monthly domino game, that he enjoyed so much.

To know Steve was to know a true friend. He valued and cultivated so many friendships through the years and was often relied upon for words of advice, a funny story or a prayer.

He was a legendary guardian of family history, and said in 1994 that, “in the end all we have left are pictures that fade, some sad but mostly happy memories, and stories. I only wish there could be more stories-not because there are not enough, but because the ones we have mean all the world to me.”

Steve was proceeded to glory by his father Ellis and his mother Katharine. His legacy lives on through his wife Lu; son Ellis and Jennifer Taylor and their three children Ellis, Chase, Peyton; his daughter Jenny Taylor; his sister Janet Rose and husband Austin; and his dog Fergus.

A grave site memorial service celebrating Steve’s life will take place on Monday, September 21st at 1:00 at the Bear Creek Cemetery in Bertram, Texas. Masks and social distancing for the safety of all his loved ones is required. All Funeral arrangements are coordinated by:
