Alfred "Al" Verne Goodwin
December 13, 1932 - August 24, 2020

Alfred Goodwin passed away peacefully on August 24, 2020, at the age of 87. Al was the youngest son of Walter and Jessie Goodwin. He was proceeded in death by his parents, as well as his in-laws, Charley and Maude White.

Al is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara of 63 years. He is also survived by his four children, Charles Goodwin and his wife Kathy, Douglas Goodwin, Elyse Williams and her husband Reagan, and Faylinn Habermehl and her husband CM, along with 12 grandchildren who cherish his memory; Jessie Higgins and her husband August, Marshall Goodwin, Marie Goodwin, Charley Goodwin, Cameron Goodwin, Chandler Goodwin, Alexander Williams, Max Williams, Mitchell Habermehl and his wife Haylie, Addison Habermehl, Parker Habermehl, Tyler Habermehl and two precious great grandsons Oliver Habermehl and Wyatt Goodwin, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Al pursued his doctorate degree from Texas A & M University and began teaching at Sam Houston State University in 1977. He was known for his passion for education and working with inner city students in need. Throughout his career as a professor at SHSU, his main priority was to help further the education of his students, always recognizing their potential and willing to be an advocate for those in need. He introduced the Youth Opportunities Unlimited program to SHSU, bringing at risk high school students to the university each summer to grow and learn, giving them the skills and opportunity to succeed. Thus, demonstrating his passion for serving others and putting their needs before his own.

Al was also known for being the family jokester with a good-natured sense of humor, an Aggie at heart, that everyone enjoyed. His greatest delight was watching his children and grandkids in their many activities. Al was a lifelong church member of University Heights Baptist Church and cherished every opportunity he was given to help others while serving in many capacities. One of Al’s greatest characteristics was his ability to connect and relate to people of all ages. He never met a stranger and always had a cross connection with a story and experience that drew people together. He loved to sing, in fact, all of his children and grandchildren asked him to sing “The Lord’s Prayer” at their weddings.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you contribute to the University Heights Baptist Church’s mission fund, 2400 Sycamore Ave., Huntsville, Texas 77340 or the charity of your choice.
