January 14, 1920 - August 30, 2020

Fred D. Valentino passed away peacefully on August 30, 2020 in Boerne, TX at the age of 100. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary, brother, Ernest, and daughter, Julie Elizabeth Valentino-Detro. Fred is survived by his beloved wife of 75 years, Mary Lou; his children, Robert Valentino of Bakersfield, CA, Thomas Valentino (Jackie) of Richland, WA, Joseph Valentino (Donna) of Denton, TX, Christopher Valentino (Merilee) of Novato, CA, and Mary Anne Oehler (Michael) of Boerne, TX; son-in-law, James Detro of Novato, CA; and 9 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.

Fred was born in Arba, Italy on January 14, 1920 and came to the United States with his family in 1922. He grew up in Houston, TX where he attended grade school through high school. He graduated from Texas A&M in 1941 with a degree in Engineering. Fred was commissioned a 2nd Lt. upon graduation and served with the Second Engineer Combat Battalion from 1941-1946. He participated in five European campaigns during WWII, including the Normandy invasion at Omaha Beach and the Battle of the Bulge. Fred was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Silver Star.

Returning from Europe in 1945, Major Valentino and Mary Lou Wold were married in St. Paul, MN on August 13, 1945. They settled in Houston, TX. Upon release from active military duty in 1946, Fred was employed by the Texas Pipeline Company in Houston and remained active in the pipeline industry throughout his career. He was a licensed professional Engineer in Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, and British Columbia. In 1965, Fred joined Bechtel Petroleum Inc. in San Francisco. He held manager positions of various departments and became Vice President in 1973. His work involved a two year assignment in Saudi Arabia and extensive travel throughout the world. Fred retired from Bechtel in 1982 and moved to Tapatio Springs in Boerne in 1983.

Retirement in the Texas Hill Country afforded Fred the opportunity to enjoy a more leisurely lifestyle. He was active in St. Peter’s Parish as well as many civic organizations and other activities in Boerne. Fred will be remembered for his love of God, family, community, and country.

The family wishes to thank his caregivers, the staff at Morningside Ministries Cibolo House Assisted Living, and Alamo Hospice for their care and support.

Services will be scheduled at a later date. Memorials may be made to St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Boerne or the Benedictine Sisters of Boerne.
