JERRY WARREN RAMSEY

Jerry Warren Ramsey, 86, of Laramie, passed away Sunday, July 15, 2018, at Ivinson Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne; his brother, Stephen of St. Louis, Missouri; his daughters, Katherine of Pendleton, Oregon, and Ellen of Pensacola, Florida. He also is survived by four grandchildren; great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

His beloved son, Warren, 58, who was born in Jacksonville, Illinois, preceded him in death, as did his parents, Eleanor and Herman Ramsey of Franklin, Illinois.

Jerry was born June 30, 1932. He grew up in Franklin, Illinois, and was a graduate of Illinois College, as was Joanne Huffman, whom he met and married in Jacksonville. His field of study was chemistry. After serving in the Army during the Korean War, he taught college chemistry at what then was Texas Western College, now known as UTEP, in El Paso. Then he and the family moved to Pennsylvania, where he taught chemistry at Penn State in Pottsville, Pennsylvania.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines hired him as a research chemist at their coal lab in Schuylkill Haven, Pennsylvania. When the government closed that lab, the family - now with three children - moved to Laramie and stayed until a move to Virginia was planned.

The Bureau eventually became part of the U.S. Department of Energy and Jerry was much involved in oil shale development and research, which was to help with the national energy supply.

After 26 years in Virginia, Jerry and Joanne returned to Wyoming. Jerry became interested in fishing, genealogy and the American Legion, while Joanne also had her interests.

No local services will be held in Laramie. Services will be held in Illinois at a later date to be determined.

Memorial contributions may be made in Jerry W. Ramsey's name to St. Labre Indian Catholic School at stlabre.org. To send condolences or to sign the online guestbook, go to montgomerystryker.com.
