Grief is a strange and powerful bird rising from the ashes of death intertwined with love.
To say that Kuang-Shy Tang was an Aggie, an accomplished scientist at M.D. Anderson and world traveler is not enough. His identity was not in his work, but in his family as a beloved son, brother, husband, father, uncle, great uncle and grandfather to Austin, Laurel, Lyndon, Margot and Matilda.
Kuang was born half a world away in the bamboo grove city of Yongan in the province of Fujian on the southeastern coast of China on April 15, 1945. He was the second of four sons of Wei-Ming Tang and Shih-Hua Mi during a time of civil unrest and when the US joined China to fight Japan as part of World War II.
The family moved to Taiwan in 1946 where he grew up as the brother who caused the least trouble.
He studied Agronomy at National Chung Hsing University in Taichung from 1964-1968. Never one to complain and always a good listener, he was an adventurer and liked to try different sports. He was exceptionally talented and joined the shooting club and horseback-riding club in college and showed skills for outdoor activities. He served in the Taiwan Army for the compulsory one year as a 2nd Lieutenant.
In 1972, he was the first in his family to cross the great wide Pacific and pursue graduate school in the United States. He learned English and had a brief stop in Missouri before starting a Master of Science degree in Genetics at Texas A&M University in College Station, where he would meet De-Shin Wang, also a graduate student, and his future wife. They dated and got married in a small ceremony on March 2, 1974 at All Faiths Chapel on campus.
They soon welcomed their first son, Chih-Hang Hans Tang, on March 12, 1975 while they were both still pursuing graduate studies. He received his Master of Science in May 1975. In 1977, after De-Shin received her Ph.D., the young family moved to Houston when he received his first job in the Department of Biomathematics of The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. They welcomed their second son, Chih-Yu Andrew Tang, on April 19, 1983. As their small family grew, so did their extended family as they helped their younger siblings who also pursued studies in America.
While at UT M.D. Anderson with his team, he published various journal articles including: “Detailed mapping of prostate carcinoma foci” in Cancer and “Optimization of prostate biopsy strategy using computer based analysis” in Journal of Urology. He utilized his training in genetics and computer programming to perform modeling and analysis of various prostate cancer cells, genetic mapping and DNA sequencing.
He retired after 31 years in 2008 with a celebratory steak meal when he found out his oldest son and daughter-in-law were expecting their first baby and his first grandson. His retirement years included world travels and the everyday joys of being a grandfather to all five of his granddaughters and grandsons as he patiently cared for them, took them to preschool, elementary school, the library, grocery store, parks and never missed a birthday celebration. Family vacations included road trips to American national parks and faraway destinations including the pyramids of Egypt, palaces of Russia, villages along the Alps of Italy, France, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria and Germany, the mushroom forests of Finland and the mountains of Tibet and Xinjiang, China. He also climbed the highest mountain in Taiwan: Yushan.
He enjoyed hiking, running, swimming, bicycling and gardening. He always prepared the turkey for hours before roasting it for Thanksgiving family meals. He especially enjoyed crawfish, burgers and ice cream on a cone.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Wei-Ming Tang and Shih-Hua Mi; his mother-in-law: Wen-Hwa Tsuei; his wife’s youngest brother: Sheng Wang; his nephew: Daniel Hyde; and his brother-in-law: Kao Dahuai.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, De-Shin, their children: Hans (Florence) and Andrew (Lisa) and grandchildren: Austin, Laurel, Lyndon, Margot and Matilda. He is also survived by his 100-year-old father-in-law: Ming-Fei Wang; three brothers and their wives: Ting-Shih Tang (Rong Gao); Chin-Shih Tang (Yu Ping Gao); Chien-Shih Tang (Min Min Wang), their children and grandchildren.
He was also close to his wife’s family including: De-Wei Wang; Fan Wang (Chen-Kung Wang); Annie Ying Hyde (Richard Hyde); Jen Wang (Yaili Wang); Yun Wang (Ching-Hui Hsu), their children and grandchildren.
He died on Sunday, July 26, 2020 in Houston, Texas, USA with his wife by his side. He was buried on Tuesday, August 4, 2020 under sunny blue skies. He was 75 years young. Gig ‘Em.
