Richard "Dick" Gunselman '78 June 23, 2020 8:10 AM updated: June 23, 2020 10:03 AM

Richard Darrell Gunselman
November 26, 1939 ~ June 2, 2020 (age 80)

Dr. Richard D. Gunselman, PhD died June 2, 2020 at Inova Mt. Vernon Hospital. Richard was born November 26, 1939 near Lawrenceburg, TN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Annie Mae Gunselman, and his brothers Douglass, Neal, “Runt,” “Jay,” and Marshall.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Hagan Gunselman, daughter Megan Earwood (Jason), son Jeffrey, grandchildren Katie and David Earwood, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Richard earned a BS degree from David Lipscomb College, a MEd from Memphis State University, and a PhD from Texas A&M University. A tank officer and Vietnam veteran, he was medically retired as a Captain from the US Marine Corps. He worked as a professor, then as a civilian for the Departments of the Army and the Air Force, retiring in 2001.

Work assignments took him and his family to various locations worldwide, including Okinawa, Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam, South Korea, Germany, Belgium, and 12 States. There were also countless trips throughout the world, including salmon and trout fishing in Alaska and New Zealand with Jeffrey, visiting Hong Kong, Tunisia, Yugoslavia, and East Berlin before the wall was torn down, and going to the DMZ in Korea.

Richard was a Renaissance man, able to quote Shakespeare, repair cars and make home repairs, play and coach any type of ball game (baseball being his favorite sport), cook delicious meals, and teach Sharon to ride a motorcycle and drive a straight shift car. He loved to spend time with the grandchildren: making breakfast pancakes after an overnight, planting and tending a vegetable garden, driving to Ft. Belvoir to see the bald eagles and their eaglets, and going bowling.

A visitation will be held at Everly Funeral Home in Falls Church, VA on Saturday, June 13, 2020 from 12:00-2:00 PM and 4:00 to 6:00 PM. A memorial service is planned for a later date in conjunction with his burial at Arlington National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be made to Fisher House, https://fisherhouse.org/; Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort, http://disasterreliefeffort.org; or National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasia, https://www.nfed.org.
