Obituary of Harold Gene Necessary

Harold Gene Necessary of Conroe, Texas was taken home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 16, 2020. He was affectionately known as “Lolly,” Grandpa, Papa, and Pop Pop by many of his friends and family. Harold was born on October 3, 1929 in Lohn, Texas to Orville Neal and Alta Ruth Necessary and was raised on a sharecropper farm there. He was a proud Aggie and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M in 1951. After serving in the US Air Force as a 1st Lieutenant and being stationed in Germany during the Korean War, he moved to Texas City to work at Amoco Oil in Texas City, Texas for 38 years where he was known for his design of “Necessary’s Corner.”

Lolly was an avid fisherman and birder. He and Jeannie spent many hours birding in several countries over the years. Harold was dedicated to helping to spread the Gospel of Christ by selflessly giving his time to people, driving church buses to pick up folks to bring them to church, attending mission trips to Mexico, and serving as a church parliamentarian, greeter, usher, and Bethlehem City worker. Harold and Jeannie are currently members of West Conroe Baptist Church in Conroe, Texas.

Harold Gene, as some of his family called him, was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Curtis Neal Necessary, William Clifton Necessary, and baby brother Jerry Lee Necessary, and 1st wife Marcelle Necessary, and infant daughter Marla Jean. He is survived by his loving wife, Jeannie, sister Lilly Laverne Pearson, children Kimberly Necessary Howell and husband Wayne and Jeffrey Mark Necessary, stepchildren Shawn Harrigan and wife Sabrina, Kerri Campbell and husband Andy, grandchildren Caleb and Weston Howell, Conor and Lane Necessary, step-grandchildren Spencer and Samuel Harrigan, Kaylee and Seth Campbell, nephews Rick and Ron Pearson, Randy Necessary, Jody Matzke, Mike, Danny and Tim Womack, and nieces Linda Ward, Christy Salsman, Carolyn English, Iris Crow, Wyvonne Langford, Billie Fremont, and Leslie Greer and sister-in-law Katie Necessary.

A celebration of Harold’s life will be held on Thursday, May 21st at 2:00pm at Metcalf Funeral Directors in Conroe, Texas. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. For those wishing to honor Harold’s memory, please consider giving to “For the Sake of the Gospel” at West Conroe Baptist Church or to the American Cancer Society.
