LINDA W. (LOO) SMITH
Loo Smith, a loyal Texas Aggie, dedicated educator and committed Democrat of high morals and ideals, died recently at her home in Bandera County. She succumbed to an aggressive, malignant Glioblastoma tumor.
A giving and gracious woman, her final gift was to donate her body to UT Health Science Center to assist those studying medicine, a decision she made in 1978.
Loo, born on Sept. 26, 1956, graduated from John Marshall High School in San Antonio and received her B.S. degree from Texas A&M. She taught social studies in Rockdale, Texas, Alexandria, Louisiana, San Antonio and Bandera.
She challenged her students to be independent thinkers as a teacher and as a coach in the Academic Decathlon.
She understood the U.S. Constitution better than most, carrying a well read and often quoted copy with her wherever she went.
Though she rarely quoted scripture, her family can testify that she “suffered no fools.”
Loo has called Bandera home since 2005 on acreage she named Sheldon’s Pond. From her garden and orchard, family and friends were treated to her canned delights, especially her salsa, pickled okra and pear butter.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Helen Wendt, and brother Jim Wendt.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Dennis Smith, and their five children, Aaron Smith (Naomi), Rachael Beker, Miriam Gamez (Matt), Cherie Williamson and Michael Smith (Samantha).
From these children, Loo was blessed to have 14 grandchildren, by whom she was affectionately known as “Goddess” and revered as “SWM- BO” (She Who Must Be Obeyed).
Loo is also survived by her father, Fred Wendt, her sister, Beverly Schwartz (John), and her brother, David Wendt (Michelle).
She will be missed by her family, her many friends and her faithful English Mastiff, Tucker.
