Fair Colvin Jr.
September 5, 1932 - April 22, 2020
Fair Colvin Jr. was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on September 5, 1932. After a battle with Parkinson’s, he died on April 22, 2020. He was preceded in death by his parents Fair and Madeline Colvin, and brother, Jerry. He married his high school sweetheart,
Mary Alice Tompkins in 1954 and they had two children. He is survived by his wife, Mary Alice; son, Ken Colvin, and his wife Dinah and their adult children Taylor, Turner and Hayley; and his daughter, Susan Johnson, and her husband Mark and their adult children, Julie, Rachel and Lauren.
He graduated from Byrd High School in Shreveport, LA in 1951 and finished his studies at Texas A&M in chemical engineering in 1955. After a brief career with the U.S. Army in Aberdeen Proving Grounds, he spent twelve years in the active reserves as a member of the U.S. Army 90th Infantry Division. Over a forty-seven year period, he worked for five different petroleum companies in various engineering and management assignments.
From early childhood, he was in church, but it was in 1951 that he made a decision for Christ during a Billy Graham Evangelistic Meeting. He grew in his Christian maturity during his school days at Texas A&M. His Christian ministry was always a focal point of his life. Throughout his business career, he held fast to his Christian beliefs and was a faithful witness to those whom he met in the business world. For years he taught Bible classes to young adults. He had the privileged of knowing and serving with many people in Midland, Houston and Dallas.
He enjoyed playing and coaching sports with his family including softball, baseball, tennis, and golf. “Poppy” especially enjoyed the annual family gathering at big Cedar Resort in Branson, Missouri.
In addition to being a member of Scofield Memorial Church, he was a member of several groups outside of church which included a Wednesday Bible study, the DAC Bible study and the CC Young Scribblers Creative Writing class where he wrote and published his memoir.
He was a loving husband to his wife, Mary Alice, for 65 years and a devoted father and grandfather to his children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.
Due to current circumstances, a small family graveside service is planned at Restland in Dallas. Memorials may be made to Scofield Memorial Church in Dallas, TX or the Parkinson’s Voice Project.
