Carl Lee Hellums
October 5, 1934 ~ April 8, 2020 (age 85)

Carl Lee Hellums was born on October 5, 1934, in Banquete, Texas, to Carl Johnson Hellums and Dorothea Smith Hellums. Upon completion of high school, he attended Texas A & M University where he was a proud member of Squadron 18. While in college, Carl Lee formed many lifelong friendships that he treasured until his death on April 8, 2020, at Uvalde Memorial Hospital. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged, until "Uncle Sam" called him back for a year to serve during the Berlin Crisis.

Carl Lee began his career as a coach, teacher, and part-time rancher, eventually deciding to pursue the full-time joy of ranching along with the challenges that came with the job. He raised sheep, mohair goats, cattle, and "chivos," always accompanied by the finest beloved Border Collies and good horses. Many that worked with him will agree that the mornings began early and continued as long as it took to get the day's task completed.

"Hellums" was an avid, devoted, and profound fan of anything associated with Texas

A & M, as well as sports of any kind. He enjoyed bird hunting, traveling, and was blessed by so many friendships, never missing an opportunity to have fun or enjoy life to the fullest.

He was a member of St. Philip's Church, "Wylie and the Coyotes," The 12th Man Foundation, and the Uvalde Area A & M Club. “Hellums” also served as President of the Uvalde Country Club.

Carl Lee was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Deana Hellums Shaw. He is survived by his wife of thirty-seven years, Phyllis Fletcher Hellums, son, Carl Bob Hellums (Jaye), and grandchildren, Emily Hellums and Carl Allen Hellums.

A Committal service will be held at the columbarium of St. Philip’s Church on Monday, June 8, 2020 at 11:00 a.m., followed by a Memorial service at 12:00 noon and lunch at the Uvalde Country Club.

Memorials may be made to St. Philip's Episcopal Day School or Church, or to the charity of one's choice.
