William "Bill" Bryla '70 March 16, 2020 9:45 AM updated: March 16, 2020 9:54 AM

William “Bill” Joseph Bryla, 71, of Wimberley, Texas, passed away with family by his side on January 13, 2020, due to lymphoma.

Bill was born to Louis John Bryla & Vernell Danz Bryla in New Jersey on August 15, 1948. He was raised alongside his four siblings in Fredericksburg, Texas, and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School. He graduated high school near the top of his class in 1966 and was a member of the National Honor Society. He attended Texas A&M University and earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degrees in both Finance and Accounting in 1970 and 1971. Bill went on to a decorated career with the federal government, earning numerous awards and accolades over his 35 years of employment.

Bill met and married his wife Peggy Tobin Bryla in 1975 and together they raised three children in Pasadena, Texas.

In 2012, Bill and Peggy retired to Wimberley, Texas, where the warm and sociable Bill proceeded to meet and chat with nearly every resident at least twice.

While growing up in Fredericksburg, Bill was best known as the tall guy in the little black VW bug, listening to Moody Blues. He was a lifelong Aggies fan and an avid lover of college football. Bill was a wanderer of country roads. He loved to immerse himself in nature and explore all the good eats and interesting people of small Texas towns. He explored miles and miles of trails walking across Texas, Colorado, California, Nevada, and Washington DC.

He was best known for being surrounded by his grandchildren and all nearby furry pets, sharing their positive enthusiasm for life and penchant for sneaking any tasty treats they could find.

Bill was admired by family and friends alike for his twinkling blue eyes, effervescent smile, boisterous laugh, and striking resemblance to Santa Claus.

On the day of his passing, his family witnessed six red cardinals gathering outside his window to lift his spirit to Heaven and bring joy and peace to all, knowing his time of pain had ended and he had returned to his Creator.

He was preceded in death by his niece Nicole Bryla.

His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his wife Peggy, his children Andrew Bryla, Jody Bryla-Powell & James Powell Jr, and Kelly & Matt Foster, his 7 grandchildren Emma, Cody, Myranda, Andrew Jr, Molly, Lucia, & Stella, and his 5 bonus grandchildren Jordon, Ashlyn, Adison, Rina & Lena. He is also survived by his siblings, Joan Braeutigam, Carroll & Susan Bryla, Thomas & Sandra Bryla, Jerry & Carmen Bryla, and bonus sibling Laurie & Larry Rodriguez, as well as many more nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services will be held to celebrate the life of William Joseph Bryla on Saturday January 25, 2020, at First Baptist Church located at 15951 Winters Mill Parkway, Wimberley, Texas 78676. Service at 2pm, with visitation before and after.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
