Louis R. "Toad" Morris passed away on Sunday, March 20, 2011 at the age of 91.

Graveside services with military honors were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lamesa Memorial Park with the Rev. Daniel Armstrong, of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Branon Funeral Home.

Morris was born on April 28, 1919 in Wood County, Texas, and moved to Lamesa in 1924. He was the son of O.H Morris and Bessie Duffey Morris.

Morris graduated from Lamesa High School and then Texas A&M, where he received a degree in animal husbandry and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1941. During World War II, he served in the European Theatre, including the battles of Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central Europe and received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for Valor.

Following the war, he returned home and organized the Lamesa unit of the Texas National Guard. He retired from the National Guard as a Lt. Colonel in 1965.

In addition to his service with the National Guard, he was involved in farming and insurance sales. He was a 41-year member of the Lamesa Rotary Club, having achieved 37 years of perfect attendance. He was also a founding Board member of the Lamesa Boys and Girls Club.

He married Edwina Griffin on March 17, 1946, in Lamesa. She preceded him in death in 2005.

Survivors include his son, Don Morris and his wife, Mary, of Milan, Italy and Richmond, Texas; his daughter, Ann Duran and husband, Mike, of Lamesa; grandchildren, Dr. Suzanne Brown and husband, Craig, of Buckholts, Texas, Craig Morris and fiancé, Kerry Adams, of Grapevine, LéAnn Duran of New York City, and Spencer Duran and partner, Bethany Sims, of Austin. He is also survived by great-grandchildren, Anna, Grace and Claire Brown. Other survivors include dedicated care-giver Debbie Tarlton and special friends, Raider and Ireland.

Memorial contributions to a charity of choice or the Lamesa Rotary Scholarship Fund; the Lamesa Boys and Girls Club, P.O. Box 826, Lamesa, TX 79331; or the Dawson Medical Foundation, 2200 North Bryan Avenue, Lamesa, TX 79331.
