We are heartbroken to announce the death of our son, Jonas Charles Calhoun of Texas City, TX who died in a tragic accident early Saturday, February 8, 2020.

Although only 22, Jonas touched so many lives with his kindness, love and quick wit. Those who knew Jonas, even just a little, lost a shining light in their lives.

Jonas was born April 4, 1997 in Texas City, TX. He was a 2015 graduate of Texas City High School where he was a member of the soccer and cross-country teams. He was also a member of the local band “Better Days”. Living his whole life by the sea and his love of both water and travel, he was led to pursue a Maritime Transportation major at Texas A&M University, Galveston, TX. At A&M, Jonas was a member of the Corp of Cadets and NROTC where he held various leadership positions within the Corp. Upon graduation, Jonas was to become a Merchant Marine and Ensign in the Naval Reserves.

Jonas was an avid musician, learning guitar at an early age. He wrote original material and loved various genres of music. He loved spending time with friends and family and was always the jokester within the group, making sure that everyone had a smile on their face.

Heaven is brighter now with you there and we are sure you’re now making the angels laugh.

He is greeted in Heaven by his grandfather, Charles Reid.

He is survived by his parents, Leslie and Carl Piatt of Katy, TX and Michael and Misty Calhoun of San Marcos, TX; sister, Ashley and (Kevin) Megress of Texas City, TX; brother, Joseph Wallace of San Marcos, TX; sister, Emily Calhoun of San Marcos, TX; grandmother, Carla Bryant of San Marcos, TX; grandparents, Darnell and Sharon Calhoun of Santa Fe, TX; grandparents, Shirley and Hector Westry of Cleveland, TX; uncle, Tim and (Christina) Reid of Tomball, TX; aunt, Michelle and (Rex) Gordon of Missouri City, TX; uncle, Josue and (Patricia) Westry of Katy, TX; uncle, Sammy and (Nicole) Westry of Richmond, TX; uncle, Jeremy and (Lisa) Calhoun of Conroe, TX; uncle, Charles and (Abby) Calhoun of Texas City, TX; uncle, Chris and (Rachel) Calhoun of Texas City, TX; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A celebration of Jonas’s life will be held at Carnes Funeral Home, 3100 Gulf Freeway, Texas City, TX with visitation on Friday, February 14th, 2020 from 5-8pm and funeral service on Saturday, February 15th at 10am. Burial will follow at Galveston Memorial Park. Please honor Jonas by wearing casual, TX A&M attire on Saturday.

Pallbearers are Joseph Wallace, Justin Butler, Cody Martin, Raul Luna, William Pipkin and Conner Costello. Honorary pallbearers are Tim Reid and Tracy Hill.
