Professional Football Player, Coach. For nine seasons (1948 to 1956), he played at the center and linebacker positions in the All-America Football Conference and the National Football League with the San Francisco 49ers. Born William Levi Johnson, he attended
John Tyler High School (Texas), and Tyler Junior College before transferring to Texas A&M where he played collegiate football. Signed as a non-drafted player by San Francisco, Johnson appeared in 95 total AAFC and NFL games, achieving Pro-Bowl status twice
(1952 and 1953). In 1968, he joined Paul Brown's staff with the Cincinnati Bengals during their inaugural season in the American Football League; he succeeded Brown as head coach and served at that capacity for parts of three seasons (1976 to 1978). Johnson
guided the Bengals to a 10 win 4 loss season and a second place finish in the AFC-Central Division in 1976, but would be dismissed after a 0 win 5 loss start to the 1978 season. He served as an assistant coach on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' (1979 to 1982) and
Detroit Lions' (1983 to 1984) staffs, before returning to Cincinnati in 1985, where he remained until 1990 coaching under Sam Wyche. He was a part of the Bengals' staff when their 1988 squad reached Super Bowl XXIII in 1989.
