Roll Call Tribute

Alan Venson Thompson, age 71, of Boerne passed away in the early evening of February 8, 2020. Alan was married to his high school sweetheart and lifelong love, Mary Kathryn McCauley, for 52 years. Alan was born to Woodrow Venson Thompson and Anita Doris Doyle on June 28, 1948, in Freeport, Texas.

He was raised in Angleton, Texas, and graduated from Angleton High School in 1966. After graduation, he attended Texas A&M University in College Station while being a member of the Corps of Cadets. After his Freshman year, Alan and Mary got married and returned to College Station where he went on to receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Engineering in 1970. Their next stop was Ohio State University where he completed his Master’s in Agricultural Engineering in 1971.

Once Alan had his formal education complete, the adventures in life, family and work were many. During his successful career as a Civil Engineer, his focus was mainly on Water and Wastewater Engineering. His work took them on a path from Texas to California, Texas, New Mexico, Texas, Idaho, and back to Texas. Alan’s employment pathway included moving 31 times in 52 years of marriage.

His Christian faith and involvement in the Baptist Church were important to Alan. He was ordained as a Deacon at Sharpstown Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, and served as a Deacon in numerous other churches. He served as Sunday School Director at Bee Caves Baptist Church in Bee Caves, Texas. Mary and Alan attend First Baptist Church of Boerne, Texas.

Education was top priority to Alan. Believing education can take you anywhere, he served on the School Board at Lake Travis Independent School District from 1992-2003, selflessly working for the students and community as the district experienced exponential growth. After moving to Boerne, in 2015, he taught Water Resources Engineering to seniors at the University of Texas at San Antonio for four summers. In the past few years, he served on community committees for Boerne Independent School District.

Alan’s love of sports started at a young age, playing with his brothers on Kyle Street and then as a member of the football and basketball teams in high school. He loved Texas A&M sports, especially football, basketball and baseball, Astros baseball, Oilers football, Spurs basketball, and professional golf. None of those loves compared to the enjoyment he got from watching his children and grandchildren compete. His encouragement pushed them all to give their best effort and learn from the wins as well as the losses.
Alan is preceded in death by his Mother and Father, brother James Thompson, and brother-in-law William McCauley.

He is survived by his wife Mary; his children, Matthew Todd Thompson and wife Christine of Evergreen, Colorado, Amy Marie Ruede and Jim of Pipe Creek, Texas, and Michael Venson Thompson and wife Eve of Miami, Florida; his grandchildren Megan, Chase and Audrey Thompson, Jamie and Jenna Ruede, and a sixth grandbaby on the way. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia and husband James Anderson of Lindale; sister-in-law, Mary Lorraine Thompson of Lake Jackson; brother, Doyle and wife Carol of College Station; brother, Charles of Austin; sister-in-law, Susan Kulhanek and husband Randy of Angleton; and sister-in-law, Susan McCauley of Houston. Nieces and nephews are Leon Anderson (Amy), Shelly Anderson, Greg Thompson (Aimee), Tamara Latham (Marshall), Erin Leopard (Keith), Julie Deyo (Jason), Casey Thompson, Everett Thompson, Adam and Max McCauley. Great Nieces and Nephews are Austin, Riley and Jackson Anderson; Mason Lemons, Nathan and Justin Thompson; Madilyn, Jonathan, Andrea and Jesse Latham; Wesley Winters, Chloe and Caleb Deyo and Luke and Sadie Leopard.

We would like to thank the care team at Stone Oak Methodist Hospital, Post Acute Medical Care and Methodist Main Hospital for the professional care and personal attention given over the past months.

Honorary Pallbearers are Chase Thompson, Leon Anderson, Greg Thompson, Everett Thompson, Randy Kulhanek, and Pat Garnett.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2020, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Boerne, with reception following in the fellowship hall. In remembrance of Alan, an Endowed Memorial Scholarship is being set up to help future students at Texas A&M University.
