Leopold DeBlanc Pellerin
NOVEMBER 18, 1926 – JULY 24, 2019

Leopold “Dutch” DeBlanc Pellerin, age 92 and of Houston, died at his home on Wednesday July 24, 2019 after a long battle with cancer. He was born to Elizabeth Agnes DeBlanc Pellerin and William Louis Pellerin in New Orleans, Louisiana on November 18, 1926.

Leo attended the following Houston schools – All Saints, Hogg Junior High, Lanier Junior High and San Jacinto High School and grew up in the Heights and Montrose area. At the age of 16 and in the Fall of 1943 Leo began his college studies at Agricultural & Mechanical College of Texas in College Station. He was a member of the Texas Aggie Band and the Aggieland Orchestra, playing the trumpet and clarinet.

In the Spring of 1944 and at the age of 17, Leo joined thousands of young men in the fight for his country during World War II. He enlisted in the U. S. Army April 25, 1944 and served in the Pacific Theater. He was in the infantry with the 750th AAA Anti-Aircraft Battalion. He received his Honorable Discharge on August 28, 1946. Leo’s words and of that era “Our country was a great, grand old country with a lot disciplined, hard-working, self-made people, all working towards a common goal.”

After returning home from the war, Leo finished his college studies at the Agricultural & Mechanical College of Texas, receiving his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. With his love of fishing, boating and the Texas Gulf Coast, Leo built a beach house on Surfside Beach at the age of 29. This was originally Leo’s bachelor pad to be enjoyed by family and many friends for over 25 years.

At the age of 30, Leo met the love of his life, Erline Audrey Summers, and married her on August 22, 1959 in St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Houston. Together they raised 6 children and in Catholic schools. Raising their children in the Catholic faith was very important to both of them. Leo and Erline were very devout Catholics and were members of St. Anne’s Catholic Church, St. Vincent Catholic Church and Holy Ghost Church.

While single, Leo and Erline were active members of a lively Catholic organization called the Rosarians, where they met. In this club they enjoyed dancing, music, parties, travel, and camaraderie, sharing Catholic beliefs and ideals.

Leo and Erline, side by side, built the family business, Ocean Supply, Inc. This business endeavor began with an idea and very little money, but a brilliant man in the lead. Together they built a very successful and respected business serving the offshore marine industry, and where many of his children would eventually work. Leo was a man of his word and felt people should always do what they say they will do. ”A deal is a deal” he would say. “Always tell the truth” and “keep your word” and “do the right thing” were some of the lessons he taught his children and the values he lived by. Leo was a man of his word and a handshake will do.

In 1976, Leo and Erline sold their beach house on Surfside Beach and purchased a house at Demi-John Island where they could go boating, fishing, crabbing, and more right from the back yard. The family remembers many fabulous parties and gatherings at this beloved family home. The home was enjoyed by the family for over 40 years.

Leo is survived by 6 children, Anne Marie Bradley and husband, Barry, William Louis Pellerin and wife Isela, John Thomas Pellerin and wife, Brenda, Patricia Anne Parise, Mary Margaret Bennett and husband, Stephen, and Katherine Erline Hines and husband, Daniel, and 17 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Erline Summers Pellerin, his parents and his brother Owen Pellerin, his sisters Rosemary Leggett and Marian Holm and their spouses, and his grandchild Daniel Luke Pellerin.

A private funeral will be held at Holy Ghost Catholic Church and burial at Forest Park Lawndale. The family would like to thank Dr. Eric Bernicker, and the HTC Hospice team, especially nurse Trinh aka “Jenny” and others who cared for Leo in such a nice and loving manner.

In lieu of flowers and in Leo’s memory, the family requests donations be made to Holy Ghost Church, 6921 Chetwood, Houston, Texas 77081.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Erline Summers Pellerin, his parents and his brother Owen Pellerin, his sisters Rosemary Leggett and Marian Holm and their spouses, and his grandchild Daniel Luke Pellerin. A private funeral was held at Holy Ghost Catholic Church and burial at Forest Park Lawndale.
