Koy Bright Scheiner
November 18, 1966
January 6, 2020

Koy Bright Scheiner, age 53, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2020 after a brave and courageous battle with metastatic prostate cancer.

He was born on November 18, 1966 in La Marque, Texas to Brenda Bright Budell and Charles Scheiner. He was baptized on January 29, 1967 at First United Methodist Church in La Marque, Texas and confirmed on April 12, 1981 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Brenham, Texas.

Koy attended Brenham schools from kindergarten through high school. Throughout these years, he was always involved in sports but especially loved playing football. He was a graduate of Brenham High School - Class of 1985. Koy attended Texas A & M in College Station, Texas where he received a Bachelor of Construction Science degree - Class of 1992. Koy was very PROUD to be a Texas Aggie! Whoop! He worked for Gamma Construction (an Aggie owned company) for 27 years as a Project Manager and he loved his job. While at Gamma, he met lifelong friends that became part of his extended family.

Throughout Koy’s life, he had a passion for the outdoors. He demonstrated his love for nature on a daily basis by feeding the birds and the squirrels in the backyard. He was an avid fisherman and hunter; whether that be dove, quail or pheasant. His happy place was Rockport, Texas. He loved fishing the bays. For him there was never a bad spot, “you just have to keep moving until you find the fish.” Koy thought of fishing as a great escape where all problems just seemed to fade away. He would say, “I feel closest to God when I’m on the water. I’m appreciative of all of God’s creations, especially his sunrises and sunsets! Catching fish is just a bonus!” He earned his pilot license in the late 1980s and enjoyed his hours flying. He also had a passion for fast cars and he loved driving his corvettes. He also loved listening to audio books. His favorite authors were Vince Flynn (who also lost his life to prostate cancer), Brad Thor and Mark Greaney, to name a few.

He is survived by Connie Draehn - his “Senorita”, his mother, Brenda Budell and step-father Mike Budell, his father, Charles Scheiner and his wife, Linda Scheiner, brother and sister-in-law, Stacy and Danielle Scheiner, and his nephews, Reed and Dane Scheiner, whom he loved to fish with as well as play video games with. He is also survived by his aunts Mary Murphy and Betsy Thompson and his uncle John Scheiner.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Viola and Earl Bright & Ann and Joseph Scheiner, and his aunt Janie Powell-Cormier.

The family will have a private graveside service. Honorary Pallbearers are Mike Collins, Richard Cordray, Mike Ganske, Wayne Kellam, Rae Powell, Keith Williams & the Gamma Family, as well as his friends that preceded him in death, Buddy Green, Mike Haynie, and Tom Terry.

At a future date, there will be a Celebration of Life where friends and family can share stories and honor Koy.

The family would like to thank Dr. Eric Bernicker, Susan, and Linda with the Houston Methodist Oncology Department for all of their care and support during Koy’s cancer journey. Also, a special thanks to Social Worker, Elee Ferguson, with Houston Methodist Hospital.
