George Albert Selensky
MARCH 5, 1931 ~ OCTOBER 13, 2019 (AGE 88)

George Albert Selensky passed from this life at age 88 on Sunday evening, October 13, 2019, at a local nursing home. George was born March 5, 1931, the eldest of six children of John Anthony and Elizabeth “Betty” (Kowis) Selensky.

George grew up on the family farm with cows, horses, chickens, pigs, and a seasonal vegetable garden. He helped with chores like milking the cows before catching the bus for school and again after school. He also helped his father farm rice during that time. George joined the Army National Guard while attending Robert E. Lee High School. He graduated from Lee in 1949 then attended Lee College. Before finishing he joined the Air Force where he served four years attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. George was trained in the electrical system on the B-47 Jet Bomber at Chanute Air Force Base, Illinois. Later he taught at Lake Charles Air Force Base. Finally, he taught at Hunter Air Force Base near Savannah, Georgia where after four years’ service he was honorably discharged. Next George attended Texas A&M where he graduated with an Industrial Technology Degree in 1958. After graduation, he moved to Houston and attended St Anne’s Catholic Church where he was president of the Young Adults Club and taught drafting at Bellaire High School.

While working for Metco as a sales representative, he traveled extensively throughout the US. George was mechanical minded and talented. He loved classic cars. He designed and built five, each unique and one of a kind! He worked for Del Delahousse Automotive in Pasadena and while there Delahousse commissioned him to build a very special classic car for his daughter to ride in as Queen of the Strawberry Festival Parade. That classic car was also used to introduce and honor performers at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, one being Crystal Gayle.

George had numerous hobbies. He enjoyed exercising, especially jogging. He played the guitar and banjo. In his youth, he built model airplanes. He entertained his younger siblings by creating and telling his own ‘Flash Gordon’ spaceship stories at night. One of George’s unique drawings in high school depicted US fighter planes in battle with enemy planes during WWII. He was given special recognition, and his artwork was displayed in Culpepper Furniture Store window on Texas Avenue. Later in life, the highlight of his day was reading The Baytown Sun.

After his father’s death, George lived with his mother, Betty, and grandmother Eva Kowis at the Selensky homestead. While improving the family homestead for his mother and grandmother’s safety and comfort, his grandmother passed away. Later, his mother’s health failed. George’s deep love and devotion to his “Little Momma Baby” was shown by entertaining her, playing his guitar and singing “You Are My Sunshine”, for truly, she was the sunshine of his life.

As godfather to many, George loved books, and gifted many to his loved ones. George was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. George is preceded in death by his parents, John and Elizabeth Selensky, sibling John David Selensky, two brothers-in-laws Pete Golla and Perry Beauchamp, and numerous relatives. George is survived by four siblings: Dolores Beauchamp, Irene Golla & (husband Davis McCauley), Fred Selensky & (wife Carolyn), and Bernard Selensky & (wife Gerri).
