Richard Kotara
August 9, 1963 - October 12, 2019
On Saturday, October 12, 2019, Richard Kotara, loving husband and father of two, passed away at the age of 56.
Richard was born August 9, 1963 in San Antonio, Texas to Anthony and Ginger Kotara. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology with a minor in Business from Texas A&M in 1987. Richard put himself through school working as a restaurant manager. He combined
his love and talent for cooking to continue working as a restaurant manager after graduation. He worked for a variety of companies, most recently as a GM for Five Guys in Houston, Texas. On November 28, 1992 he married Kathleen Carrie Doherty. They raised
two exceptional children, Christi and Colin.
Richard had a passion for many things; cooking, camping, fishing, archeology, and music. He was famous for his cheesecakes and preparing delicious meals. His love for cooking was enjoyed by family and friends. It was not unusual for him to use neighbors as
“guinea pigs” to try out a new recipe. He loved camping and fishing while exploring the great southwest. He loved to travel with his family to many national parks, his favorites being the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone. He spent many enjoyable times fishing,
especially up in Canada at Kathy’s cousin’s cabin on Rideau Lake, Ontario. Richard loved archeology and travelled around the southwest exploring different sites. He was a walking encyclopedia of ancient cultures and was delighted to share his knowledge with
others, especially his children. Being part Cherokee, he appreciated the history and customs of many native american tribes, collecting kachina dolls and black pottery. Richard was a devoted music aficionado. He could hear a few notes of a song and tell you
the name of the song, the artist who sang it, what album it was recorded on, etc. He was always quizzing family and friends on lyrics and musical performers. Richard was known for his sense of humor, compassion, and his kind spirit.
Richard was preceded in death by his grandparents, Steve and Bertha Kotara. He is survived by his wife Kathleen, his two children Christi and Colin, his parents Anthony and Virginia, his sister Cyndi, his nieces Elizabeth, Lauren, Kelly, and Carrie, and several
cousins, aunts and uncles, and brother and sister-in-law.
