Jack William Currie
May 9, 1921 – September 28, 2019
Jack W. Currie was born on May 9, 1921, near Lott, Texas and joined his Lord and Savior on September 28, 2019. He was a devout Christian all of his 98 years. He graduated from Lott High School in May of 1939 and entered the U.S. Army Air Corps on January 16,
1940. He married the love of his life, Ruth Jones, on March 29, 1942. Jack entered the Flying Cadet Program in October of 1942, and received his wings and commissioned as a 2nd Lt in October, 1943. He entered the multi-engine flight program and learned to
fly the B-17 bomber. He was sent to England in January of 1944 where he flew 50 missions over enemy occupied territory in Europe during WW II before returning to the U.S. in late 1944. He was discharged and spent two years working for the Veteran’s Administration
in Waco, Texas. He was recalled to active duty in 1946 and spent three years training Army Liaison pilots. During the Korean Conflict he flew the SA-16 while in an Air-Sea Rescue Squadron in Japan. He was stationed at various Air Force bases in the U.S. and
retired on September 1, 1962 with the rank of Major.
He returned to Bryan, Texas and attended Texas A&M where he received both a BS and a Master of Education degree. He worked at Texas A&M University as a Surplus Property Procurement Officer for 17 years prior to his retirement in 1983. He and his wife, Ruth
spent many happy hours in their travel trailer and visited nearly every state, including Alaska. When they were not travelling, Jack was busy at his Circle C farm near Lott. He was a Deacon and Elder in the 1st Presbyterian Church of Bryan, a 32nd degree Mason
and a 50 year member of the Scottish Rite in Waco, Texas.
Jack is survived by three children, daughter Ruth Blatchley and husband Ron of Bryan, TX, son Don Currie and wife Deborah of Granbury, TX, and son Brian Currie of Brookshire, TX. He was the proud grandfather of Kimberly B. Gibson (Bill), Matthew T. Currie (Vicky),
and Elizabeth G. Currie (Nick). He is also survived by his seven great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
A memorial service for Jack will be held on October 10, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church of Bryan at 11 am. Remembrances in lieu of flowers can be made to First Presbyterian Church, 1100 Carter Creek Parkway, Bryan, Texas 77803.
