Rayford Jefferson Brister

Rayford Brister age 92, of San Saba, Texas passed away at San Saba Nursing and Rehabilitation on Sunday, August 11, 2019.Rayford was born on April 27, 1927 in Mertzon, Texas to George and Jessie(Fox) Brister. Rayford attended Colony School, then San Saba High School. He also attended college at Tarleton State University and Texas A&M University with a B.S. degree in Agriculture. His career began in the US Navy where he guarded prisoners at San Diego Naval Base. After two years he was discharged to attend ROTC. He was a member of the AGGIE Corp and later became an US Air Force Reserve Officer with the rank of Captain. Rayford worked as a civil servant with the Soil and Water Conservation Service. He took a five year assignment with the USDA in West Pakistan teaching them to grow corn. He transferred back to Texas after his tour was up and traveled to many locations around Texas for Soil and Water Conservation. He retired from the civil service at the Hondo, Texas office. After retirement, Rayford dabbled in farm implement sales and real estate sales. His hobbies were fishing, hunting, and gardening. He especially liked planting rare native plants. He had a real knack in nurturing plants. Rayford also liked to BBQ. He made one heck of a good smoked brisket. Rayford was selected for the 2011 Alamo Honor Flight 007 for World War II veterans to see the new war memorial. Rayford is survived by his wife Helen of 67 years; two children Sherry Brister Smay and son Stephen Brister. Numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: A.J., Eugene, David one sister; Frances and one daughter Janice Brister.
