E.M. "Mike" Cooney, Jr., age 92, passed away in his home on Wednesday, August 14, 2019 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on September 22, 1926 in Terrell, Texas to Edward M. and Della (Leinart) Cooney.

A child of the Depression and a veteran of World War II (United States Navy), Mike was a devout Christian and a strong, fiercely independent individual. He deeply loved and cherished his family, his friends, his beloved alma mater, Texas A & M (Class of 1947) and his country.

In 1943, at age 17, Mike enrolled in Texas A&M. A year later, after turning 18, he left school and enlisted in the United States Navy where he served in the Pacific Theatre on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Sangamon. In 1945, during the invasion of Okinawa, Mike narrowly escaped a kamikaze attack that left him floating in the China Sea.

After the war Mike returned to Texas A&M and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He met and married the love of his love, Elizabeth Louise ("Betty") Driver. They had one son, Edward Michael Cooney, III, and were very active in the First United Methodist Church in Austin, Texas. During their time in Austin, Mike served many clients in his successful career with Prudential Insurance Company, enjoyed traveling with Betty, especially to A&M games and doting on his three grand-daughters. Mike and Betty moved to San Antonio in 2002 and he became active in the Independence Village Community, the San Antonio Aggie Club and treasured all things associated with his three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Elizabeth Louise "Betty" Cooney. Mike is survived by his son, Mike Cooney, III and wife Judy; grandchildren, Alison (husband - Jeff Judkins), Pamela and Jennifer; and great-grandchildren, Jordan, Mason and Austin.
Above all, Mike's greatest loves were his wife Betty, his family, his beloved Aggies, his valued friends, his faith and his country.
