April 21, 1942 – August 14, 2019
Jerry W. Gunter, Texas A&M Class of ’64 of College Station, Texas died on August 14, 2019, after a prolonged illness. He was 77 years old. A visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 pm Friday, August 16, 2019, at Callaway-Jones Funeral and Cremation Center in Bryan, Texas. A Celebration of Life will be at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 17, 2019, in the Bluebonnet Chapel at Callaway-Jones Funeral Center with interment to follow at the Memorial Cemetery of College Station – Aggie Field of Honor. Services are in the care of Callaway-Jones Funeral and Cremation Centers, Bryan-College Station.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 57 years, LaWren, his son Greg Gunter (Class of ’85), and daughter-in-law Wendy Gunter (Class of ’93) all of College Station. The treasures of his life were his granddaughters Abbie, Libby, Shelby, and Phoebe Jo Gunter, who he absolutely adored and completely showered with love and “Hugs as big as Kyle Field”.
Jerry was the second son born to Joe and Vernon Gunter on April 21, 1942 in Kirbyville, Texas. Growing up in a small town East Texas, Jerry learned to hunt, fish, and play sports especially baseball. He excelled in academics and was a 4-sport athlete in High School. Upon graduation from Kirbyville High School, he was offered a baseball scholarship to Texas A&M University. This began a lifelong devotion to Texas A&M where he graduated with a degree in Psychology in 1964. He was instrumental in bringing clinical treatment programs to the Texas Depart of Corrections in the 60’s. After leaving TDC, he became the Director of Personnel for Houston Lighting and Power and helped lead that organization in employee diversification during his tenure. Jerry then began a new career and owned his own real estate brokerage in the north Houston/Conroe area for almost 30 years.
Jerry found his true calling in 2002 with the birth of his first of four grand-daughters. He excelled at his job as “Papa” teaching his grandchildren about Christ’s unconditional love and the “redemption available for all who believe”. Dad will be missed dearly as he was a fountain of encouragement and ready source of love and hugs.
