Upon graduation from College in 1955 he joined the Texas Highway Department as a Civil Engineer Assistant in Pharr, Texas. That same year he met the love of his life, Dora Thatcher. After a three-month courtship, they married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church September 14, 1956.

In November 1956, along with his new bride, he reported to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Then Robert established “Beattie Engineering Service” as sole owner and also partnered with Vera Engineering and Starr Engineering Company in Starr County. During his life time Robert was active in various civic groups and organizations. Texas Public Engineering Association, Club Amistad del Valle, Hebbronville Chamber of Commerce. He was a life time active parishioner and member of Our Lady of Sorrows in McAllen, Texas.

After 20 years in the private sector, in March 2006 he retired with 51 years of Professional Civil Engineering Service to devote his life to his loving wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchild.
