Donna Bates Price
APRIL 15, 1943 – JUNE 10, 2019

On the morning of June 10, 2019, Donna went home to be with the Lord and loving family members. She fought a short, but courageous battle with cancer aided every minute of every day by her devoted husband of 47 years, Dexter. Her final days were spent at home comforted by family and friends. Donna will be missed daily in the lives of so many she touched with her unmatched kindness and caring, but we take comfort in knowing she is without pain or tear, certainly hugging Darren, her brothers, sister, mother and father.

Donna was born April 15, 1943 to parents Melvin Maxwell Bates and Mary Johnnie Rufus Caradine in Houston, Texas. The family attended North Main Baptist Church. She was the second of four Bates children, raised in the Houston Heights Donna attended Reagan High School where she was Swiss Flag Lieutenant in the Reagan Red Coats Drill Team. . Donna and Dexter married in 1971 and lived much of their married life on the northwest side of Houston before moving to Pearland. In 1977 they were blessed with a beautiful curly red headed son named Louie “Darren” Price.

Donna is survived by her husband Dexter, sister-in-law Pat Naquin and husband Hollis and brother-in-law Richard Bailey. Numerous nieces and nephews: Price Naquin and wife Debbie, Sage Holli Bara, Rachel Riebeling and husband Greg, Ryan Riebeling and wife Erin, and Stephanie Bates Higgins and husband Ryan. Great nieces and nephews: Allann Arnold & husband Bill, Taylor deClercq and husband Matt, Matthew Campbell, Abby Naquin, Allison Naquin, Ava Durfor and Levi Durfor, and Caitlyn Higgins and Collin Higgins. Great great niece and nephews Jet deClercq, Quin deClercq and Waylon Arnold. Donna was preceded in death by her son, Louie Darren Price, her parents, brothers Johnnie Maxwell and Douglas and sister Sandra, and her in-laws Louie and Etha English Price.

In the spring of 2005, Donna earned a BS degree in horticulture from Texas A&M University. This journey was shared by two cherished friends, Trish and Jackie. The group referred to themselves as the “Three Musketeers” and built a close bond Donna enjoyed right to the very end. Donna achieved the title of Master Gardner and shared her talents working with plants and flowers both professionally and with her family. She also loved animals; dogs, cats and actually never met a bug she didn’t like.

After receiving her Horticultural degree from Texas A&M, Donna began working for Mr. Gary at Enchanted Forest Nursery in Richmond. She loved her job there so much that she would make the 80 mile round trip journey, rain or shine, until her husband insisted she quit, worried about her driving the distance alone. She remained close with several of her co-workers, and they still enjoyed frequent luncheons after she left.

Donna was a true Texan. Her 3rd great grandparents Francis and Margaret Buck Holland were of the Austin’s Original Old Three Hundred Settlers. Her uncle, one of Francis and Margaret’s sons was Tapley Holland – a hero at the Alamo.

She will live in our hearts as the wonderful, loving wife, sister, mother, aunt and friend and will be missed by all who knew her.

Should friends and family desire, contributions may be made to the Houston Humane Society in Donna’s memory, to honor her love of all animals.

At the family’s request since this is a Celebration of Life, please no black attire, dress casual.
