Memorial services for Jack R. Irish, 89, of Lufkin, Texas will be held on May 29, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church with The Referend Max Reynolds officiating. Private burial services will be conducted at a later date.
Mr. Irish was born near Joaquin, Texas, the descendent of two pioneer Texas families. He died May 14, 2019 in Lufkin, Texas. He graduated from Texas A&M as a Distinguished Military Student and received a degree in Industrial Engineering. He also obtained an MS Degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Houston.
During the Korean Conflict, he served as a tank platoon leader in the Second Armored Division when that unit returned to Germany as the first American division to build NATO forces. He later was discharged from the army reserve with the rank of Captain.
He joined Cameron Iron Works in Houston as an Industrial Engineer. In 1955, he joined Texas Foundries. There he held positions of Project Engineer, Work Simplification Engineer, Chief Industrial Engineer, Production Control Manager and Director of Company Services, consisting of the departments of Industrial Engineering, Production Control, Manufacturing Planning and Management Information Systems. He also was President of Luftex Machine Products Company until Texas Foundries purchased it. He then continued as the Manager of Texas Foundries’ Machining Division. In 1988, he joined Citation Corporation in Birmingham, Alabama and served on their corporate staff until they purchased Texas Foundries. He returned to Texas Foundries in 1990 as Director of Manufacturing Engineering and served as a consultant to other Citation divisions. He retired in 1996 but continued as an independent consultant for several years.
He was Past President of the Lufkin Jaycees, Piney Woods Chapter of Professional Engineers, Lufkin Exchange Club, Lufkin Toastmasters Club and Angelina County A & M Club. He served several years as Area Councilman for the Association of Former Students, Texas A & M. The Lufkin Jaycees named him, “Boss of the Year” in 1965. He served two consecutive terms as Senior Warden of St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church and coordinate the relocation and building of the present church facilities when the previous facility burned.
He was a member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas and served as President of the Milton Irish Chapter No. 56 SRT, Lufkin. He also served five years on the Cit of Lufkin Zoning Board of Appeals.
He was a member of Lufkin Masonic Lodge, No. 669 AF&AM, Lufkin, Chapter No. 240-R.A.M., Lufkin Council No. 176-R.&S.M., Lufkin Commandery No. 088-Kingths Templar, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Arabia Shrine Temple and the Lufkin Shrine Club.
His hobbies included hunting, fishing, gold and genealogy. He was a member of of the Men’s Golf Association and the Senior Men’s Golf Association of Crown Colony Country Club and served two terms on the Board of Directors of that Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife of 65 years, Millicent Arnold Irish, on November 18, 2018.
Survivors include his nephew, Dr. Lyn Irish and wife Leigh Ann of Shreveport, LA; Niece Linda Irish Bostic and husband Keddy of Jupiter, Fl; Sister-in-law Bette Irish of Shreveport, LA and numerous cousins.
The family will receive friends following the memorial service in the Parrish Hall, St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church.
