James Hollingsworth

James "Hap" Hollingsworth, 79 of Blooming Grove, passed away Friday, Dec. 28, 2018 in Arlington. He was born Dec. 20, 1939 in Dresden to Clyde and Alma Vera Clark Hollingsworth. Hap graduated from Barry High School in 1958, then he went to Navarro College graduating in 1960. After graduating from Navarro College he went to Texas A&M, where he graduated in 1962 with his Bachelor Degree and then graduating in 1964 with his Masters Degree. He continued his education at University of Florida from 1964 to 1966, dissertation research in Columbia 1966 to 1968 and obtained his PhD in 1970.
Hap taught sociology at The University of Alabama from 1969 to 2000 with about 10,000 students passing through his class. He was a Fulbright Scholar-Researcher, Universidad de Guadalajara 1978 to 1979. He wrote two books, one research guide on the developmental disabilities in Alabama and several chapters in books and many articles in scholarly journals. He lead many students on study trips to Mexico, Columbia and Costa Rica.
Hap was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bud Hollingsworth and nephew Cole Hollingsworth.
He is survived by his brother, Ronald Hollingsworth; sister-in-law, Donna Hollingsworth; nephew, Matthew Hollingsworth and numerous cousins and friends.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Blooming Grove. Funeral services to follow at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Bro. Grady Cashion officiating.
Interment to follow at Dresden Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Benny Melton, Larry Farish, Jack Lewis, Johnny Lawrence, Bubba Evans, Rory Evans.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Baptist Church PO Box 289 Blooming Grove, Texas 76626.
