M. Ann Abbe
JANUARY 3, 1952 – JUNE 15, 2019

On June 15, 2019, Margaret Ann Abbe died peacefully surrounded by her loved ones following a stroke.
Ann, as we all knew her, was born in Sherman, Texas, on January 3, 1952. Her father, A. A. Melton, worked for Texas A&M and soon moved to Balmorhea, Texas, where he ran the Texas A&M experimental station. The family subsequently moved first to McGregor then to College Station where Ann graduated High School before enrolling at Texas A&M University. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in English and a Master’s degree in Rhetoric.

Ann devoted her life to fund raising for non-profit organizations, most of which were involved in education. She worked at Mid-American University in Nebraska, then became the Alumni Director at Southwest Texas State University. She moved to Dallas in 1986 to serve as the Subscription Services Manager for KERA. She later served as Alumni Director and Director for Development at the University of Texas at Arlington. She moved on to serve as Director for Development at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth.

Ann returned to the University of Texas at Arlington to serve as Vice President for Development until she left to found Abbe & Associates, a consulting service for non-profits. Later she joined Skystone Ryan and Associates, a national consulting agency for non-profits. She returned to academia as Associate Vice President for Development at the University of North Texas before re-opening Abbe & Associates where she helped several organizations until she retired.

Ann served on numerous boards for non-profit organizations, including Shakespeare in the Park in Fort Worth, the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education “CASE” where she held many positions including Chairperson of the organization. She proudly served on the board of the Former Students Association of Texas A&M.

Ann was a person of staunch integrity and honor who enjoyed mentoring others. But above all she was devoted to her large and close-knit family. In the last six years her chief passion was her grandson Jeremiah, about whom her universe revolved.

Ann is survived by her husband, William S. “Bill” Harris of Arlington, her daughter and son-in-law, Marisa Abbe and Jarrod Berger of Denton, her grandson Reil Jeremiah Berger, her older brother Donnie Melton and his wife Mei-Ling Melton of Rosenburg, her older sister and her husband, Evelyn and Matt Medlock of College Station, and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, A.A. Melton, her mother Eloise Melton, her younger brother Mike Melton, and her younger sister Sandy Heidtke.

She has touched the lives of so many people that she will have a lasting positive impact on our world. Should friends desire, contributions may be made to the general scholarship fund at Texas A&M University, the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, or KERA Public Broadcasting for North Texas.
