Frank was born and grew up in Troy. Upon graduation from high school he joined his brother at Texas A&M University. At the start of WWII, both left college life to serve their country in the US Army. Frank served in the South Pacific and joined Co. H 172nd Infantry 43rd division in July, 1943. His duty was machine gun operator, fighting battles in Guadalcanal, Munda, Solomon Islands, New Zealand, New Guinea, and the invasion of Luzon in January, 1945. Frank also received Asiatic-Pacific Medal with 3 Bronze stars, Philippine Liberation Medal with 1 Bronze star, WWII Victory Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and Good Conduct Medal.

After Frank came home, he suffered malaria for months. He returned to Texas A&M for a brief time and ultimately decided to move back to the family farm in Troy to help his parents.
