John B. Strange
OCTOBER 4, 1934 ~ APRIL 27, 2019 (AGE 84)

John B. Strange, age 84, of Par Lane, Greeneville, passed away peacefully on Saturday.

He was born in Cocke County, to the late Wesley and Verna Strange.

He graduated from Tusculum College in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. During his tenure in the Air Force he received his master’s degree in Mathematics from Texas A&M.

He entered the Air Force in 1959. He served as a navigator on an AC 47 gunship in Vietnam, flying over 250 combat missions. Upon returning from Vietnam, he was assigned to Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, as a scientist where he tested and evaluated a variety of devices and systems. His last military assignment was at the Pentagon in Washington DC as part of the Air Force Studies and Analysis. He retired in 1979 after 20 years of services with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

After military retirement he returned to Greene County where he joined the faculty at Tusculum College. He taught mathematics for 25 years until his retirement in 2005.

He was an active member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church as long as his health permitted. He served on the missions and outreach committees, worked with the Gabriels program and was a member of the Cumberland Adventurers Sunday School Class.

John, affectionately known as “Chief” is survived by his wife: Karen; two sons: Mike Strange and his wife, Lorie Strange and Charlie Strange of the home; daughter: Beth Green and her husband, Dr. Tim Green; step-daughter: Nikki Fellars; one brother: James Strange and his wife, Cindy; aunt: Frankie Goode; seven grandchildren: Joshua Strange, Samantha Strange, Sue Bush and husband, Alex, Caroline Green, Madelyn Green, Cardin Green, and Mary Kate Green; brother-in-law: Doc Hicks; sisters-in-law: Frances Strange Wampler, Candi Strange; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; special extended family: Tom and Jill Parker and children: Eric Parker and Erica Brown; and his very special companion, Andrew C. McTarfey “Andy”.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Carol, the mother of his children; a granddaughter: Savannah Strange; three brothers: Joe Strange, George Strange, and Drew Strange; one sister: Julie Hicks.

A special thanks to Dr. Brad Strange and staff, Dr. Melissa Gaffney, his caregivers, Angie Isham, Chelsey Luttrell, Judy Bacon, and Kathy Mercer.

The family will receive friends from 4 – 6:45 p.m. on Friday, May 3rd, in the Armitage Hall at Greeneville Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Memorial services will follow visitation at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary of Greeneville Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Jamie Lively, the Rev. Abby Cole Keller, and the Rev. Jim McGuire will officiate.

Military graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Shiloh Cemetery. Family and friends are asked to gather at the cemetery where a funeral detail from Shaw Air Force Base will convey military honors.

Honorary pallbearers will be his friends and neighbors of Par Lane and Southwind Circle, as well as the members of the Cumberland Adventurers class.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund at Greeneville Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
