James "Jim" S. Gallatin
May 23, 1939 - April 10, 2019

James Sharpe Gallatin, 79, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at Charlton Methodist Hospital, surrounded by his family members.

James was born in Odessa, Texas on May 23, 1939 to James C. and Evelyn Sharpe Gallatin. He graduated from Sunset High School in Oak Cliff in 1957, and while there, he met his first wife of 35 years, Cherie Mishler Gallatin, who passed away in March 1995. James received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M in 1961 and remained a loyal Aggie for the remainder of his life. He then served as 2nd Lieutenant for the United States Air Force following his commission acceptance from the Texas A&M ROTC program in October 1961. He was honorably discharged in February 1963 after accepting a position with Southwestern Bell, where he worked as an engineer from 1964 until his retirement in 1991. He continued to work with Southwestern Bell on a contract basis for several years following his retirement.

He and his family joined the New Life in Christ Lutheran Church in 1982, where he volunteered on the property committee and supported the youth group. He also served the Duncanville community by volunteering with the Lions Club and took great pride in planning the annual Fourth of July parade. He even worked as an algebra instructor at Cedar Valley Community College and was highly regarded by his students. Outside of his community work, he was fiercely loyal to his family and cherished the years he spent playing with the “kiddos”: his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

He found his joy in helping others and always cast kindness and patience to others without a second thought. He was rare, humble, and selfless, more concerned with the joy and wellbeing of other people. A child of God, he was a servant to his community, and he lived a life of grace, compassion, and patience. He was a friend to everyone he met and took care of anyone who needed it. Anyone who knew him knows that he maintained a quiet, unassuming demeanor and dedicated his life to the service of others.

He is predeceased by his parents, Jim and Evelyn Gallatin; his wife, Cherie Gallatin; his daughter, Diane Story and his son-in-law, Leonard Story. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Patricia Rhody; his brother, Gary Gallatin; his daughter, Meg McGuire and her husband, Mike; his son, Brian Gallatin and his wife, Julie; his stepson, Jack Rhody and his wife, Shannon; his stepson, John Rhody and his fiancée, Michelle; grandchildren, Christina Wren and her husband, Casey; Heather Kilmer; Justin Rhody and his wife, Christina; Justin Story and his wife, Jordan; Sean Rhody; Jessica Cowan and her husband, Robert; Colten Rhody; Catherine Story; Diane McGuire; and Grace Rhody; and 14 great-grandchildren.
