Dr. Reuben "Rudy" Earl Koenig
November 25, 1927 - March 26, 2019

Reuben Earl Koenig was called back to the Lord on March 26, 2019 in Big Spring, Texas after a brief illness.

He was born in Houston, Texas on November 25, 1927 to Simon Henry Koenig and Eunice Harper. He grew up in Alleyton, Colorado County, Texas. He was a 1949 Graduate of Texas A & M College, and a 1953 graduate of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

Rudy married the love of his life, Frances Helen Lewis, of Columbus, Texas, in 1949. Following military service in the U.S. Army, he accepted an internship at Gorgas Hospital in Balboa Heights, Panama Canal Zone, followed by two years residency. He performed a further two years residency at M.D. Anderson Institute in Houston, Texas.

He often expressed joy at seeing the institution grow to such a renowned medical center. A general and head and neck surgeon, he was a diplomat of the American College of Surgeons.

Reuben practiced for four years in Big Spring, twelve years in Kingsville & for over thirty-three years in Victoria, where he served on the board of Citizens Medical Center there. He then retired to Kerrville.

Reuben was a member of the United Methodist Church and was a Mason for over fifty years. Rudy & Frances attended the first Emmaus walks & treasured their experiences, remaining close friends with their fellow pilgrims.

He loved to garden, planting many fruit & nut trees everywhere he lived. And he loved animals, sharing the love of many pets over his life.

He is survived by sons Richard L. Koenig & Kenneth M. Koenig of Kerrville, daughter Karen Koenig of Big Spring, niece Darla Koenig Hogan of Pearland, sister-in-law Emma Jean Koenig of Friendswood, nephew Darron Koenig of Friendswood and by close friends, including Jill Willbanks of Big Spring, who called him her second father, and by many others who love and miss him.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances, of 61 years, and by two brothers, Robert Koenig and Richard Koenig.
