LT COL ROBERT WILLIAM MARSHALL USMC (RET.)
October 31, 1960 - April 20, 2019
After a very brave 19 month fight with cancer, Lt Col Robert William Marshall USMC, 58, of Huntsville passed away on the eve of Easter, April 20, 2019. Bob was born in Washington DC to Dr. John and Frances Marshall.
A viewing will be Friday, April 26, 2019 from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. at Cove United Methodist Church, 366 Old Hwy 431, Hampton Cove, 35763.
10:00 Service followed by a public reception.
1:00 Motorcade processional will leave the church for Maple Hill Cemetery.
1:30 Full military honors at graveside.
Upon graduating Bishop McNamara High School in Maryland in 1978, Bob accepted a NROTC Scholarship to Texas A&M. He graduated in 1983 (but class of ‘82) with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was an accomplished student as a member of the Fish Drill team, the Fish Drill Team Instructor, Commander of the Ross Volunteer Company, and The Who’s Who of America.
Following college, Bob served as a United States Marine Pilot for 21 years. He served as a helicopter and fixed-wing pilot. In addition to the many missions he had around the world, he earned his Master’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA and served as a faculty member of the aeronautical engineering department at the US Naval Academy. He retired out of Camp Lejeune, NC as a Lt Col in 2004 to come to Huntsville, AL where he took an engineering job with Aerodyne. Seven years ago he accepted a position with Torch Technologies and remained with them until his passing.
Bob was extensively engaged in the community and his church. He had a heart for giving back! He took his passions for the military to start and lead organizations that will continue to give to our community for years to come. He was the co-founder of the Semper Fi Community Task Force in 2007, where his vision, along with a team of dedicated men and women, bring healing and affirmation to wounded warriors every year.
In addition, he served as the president of the Madison County Military Heritage Commission the past four years. Under his direction the commission saw to the rebuilding of the Hall of Heroes Awards Cabinets in the Madison County Courthouse; recording the oral History of the Heroes; and the implementation of the Price of Freedom program (taking heroes to the schools to tell the next generation their stories). Bob was very much a visionary and had a gift for leading people to that vision. His servant leadership exuded from him as he served on many boards including Still Serving Veterans and Christian Women’s Job Corp.
In addition to the military, Bob’s heart beat for the youth. He sought out young men to mentor. He invested in small group ministry and youth groups in every church he attended around the world. The seeds that he sowed into the hearts of these young men continue to grow even in his absence.
He was a beloved husband, father, and uncle. Bob showed his family how to live a life characterized by love, compassion, and humility.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of twenty-nine years, Jana Jones Marshall; son, Samuel Lee Andrew Marshall; daughter, Carolyn Grace-Marie Marshall; mother, Frances Rader Marshall; sisters, Jeneanne Rae and husband, Eugene, Christine Magee and husband, Jim, and Anne Marie Walker; brother, Jim Marshall and wife, Robin; and many nieces and nephews.
Bob was much loved by all who came in contact with him. He was always described as humble, faithful, honest, intelligent, compassionate, and selfless. He exuded a love that could only come from his Heavenly Father. He was an inspiration to so many especially as he fought this cancer battle. Not once did he fear for his own life...it was always about reaching out to others and taking care of his own. We were deeply blessed!
