Colonel Charles L. Davenport
November 19, 1933 - April 15, 2019

Colonel Charles L. Davenport died on Monday, April 15, 2019 in Arlington, Texas. He was 85 years old. His beloved wife, Sally McEver Davenport preceded him in death. He is also preceded in death by an infant son Charles Allen Davenport.

He is survived by his daughter, Cindy Sherrill and husband, Paul of Arlington; grandchildren: Matthew Sherrill and wife, Erica of Brentwood, Tennessee; Abigail and husband, Christopher Bryan of Denton; two great-grandchildren: Lily Claire Sherrill and Fields Matthew Sherrill.

Charles was born on November 19, 1933 in Kingsville, Texas to Carlos and Melba (Graves) Davenport. He graduated from Ennis High School, Class of 1951. He received a BS Degree in Agriculture from Texas A&M University in May of 1955. Upon graduation he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. He became a field artillery officer with specialties in operations, force development and training. He served in command positions and as a staff officer on high level Army and Joint Service Staffs. He attended the Armed Forces Staff College in 1969 and the Air War College Seminar Program in 1971. He served in combat in Vietnam during 1965-1966.

During his career, he was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, two Army Commendations Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge.

He retired as a Colonel at Fort McPherson, Georgia in October 1978. He then moved to his small Dooley Creek Farm in North Georgia near Morganton where, among other things, he raised hay crops, maintained improved pastures and ran a small scale purebred cow/calf operation.

After his second retirement, he moved back to Texas and settled in Fredericksburg in July 1993.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, April 26, 2019 at 2 p.m. in Myrtle Cemetery with Rev. Charles Kuthe officiating under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary, Inc.

The family requests instead of flowers memorial donations be directed to the American Cancer Society or to the cause of your choice.
